was re-established as the official language of the country. It’s
revival as a literary language dates from the 14
th
century as well.
The three hundred years of domination of the French language
in many spheres of life affected the English language more than
any other single foreign influence before or after. The impact of
French on the vocabulary can hardly be exaggerated the
borrowings reflect the spheres of Norman influence on English
life.
INDEPENDENT AZERBAIJAN
Azerbaijan is a sovereign democratic republic. It is situated in
the South-Eastern part of the Caucasus. Azerbaijan borders on
Dagestan, Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Iran. Azerbaijan covers
a territory of 86,6 thousand square kilometers. Its population is
more than eight million people now. About 80 per cent of the
population of Azerbaijan are Azerbaijanian. The rest are Lazgins,
Kurds, Georgians, Russians, Avars, Tatars. The capital of
Azerbaijan is Baki. Baki is situated on the shore of the Caspian
Sea. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is situated in the
South-West of Azerbaijan. Its capital is Nakhchivan. Azerbaijan
has its right to have relations with foreign states and form its
military forces.
All citizens of Azerbaijan who have reached the age of 18
have the right to vote. Every citizen of Azerbaijan who has

reached the age of 23 has a right to stand for elections to Milli
Majlis (National Assembly).
The Constitution of Azerbaijan ensures its citizens the right to
work, to have education, freedom of speech, press, assembly and
demonstrations.
The official language in the country is the Azerbaijani lan-
guage.
Azerbaijan has its own flag, anthem and emblem.
(The Azerbaijan national flag has three colors: red, blue, and
green; on the flag there is a half Moon and eight pointed star.
The head of the state is President, The highest body of state
power and the legislative body is Milli Majlis (National
Assembly). Milli Majlis is elected every four years. It has the
right to adopt and amend the Constitution of Azerbaijan. Milli
Majlis appoints the Cabinet of Ministers and the Supreme Court
of Azerbaijan.
The highest executive and administrative body in Azerbaijan
is the Cabinet of Ministers. The Cabinet directs the work of
Ministers and carries out measures for maintaining public order
in the republic.
Azerbaijan women have equal rights with men in economical,
political and cultural activities.
The trade unions take an active part in developing the national
economy of our Republic.
Azerbaijan is a sun-filled country. It is a land of mountains. It
has a dry subtropical climate, summer lasts four or five months
and winter is mild and warm, but in Nakhchivan summer is hot
and winter is cold.
Azerbaijan is one of the world's richest countries in vegetation.
Here people grow grapes, apples, pomegranates, mulberry-trees,

oranges, nuts, lemons. Our republic has many schools, colleges,
universities and Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. It has its
natural gas and oil. It is a highly developed industrial country.
Chemical industry and machine building are the main branches of
the Republic's industry.
AZERBAIJAN CONSTITUTION
Constitution is a main law of state. Our Constitution – the
constitution of independent Azerbaijan Republic was established
on the 12
th
of November 1995.
The whole Azerbaijan people took an active part in discussing
the Draft of the present Constitution.
By the Constitution the government of the Azerbaijan
Republic is composed of three coordinate branches: the executive
one, the legislative one and the judicial one. The executive power
is vested in a President, who holds office for 5 years, and is
elected. The legislative power is vested in a Parliament. The
judicial power is vested in all courts of our Republic. The
adoption of the new Constitution is tremendously important for
the country’s internal life.
The Constitution guarantees Azerbaijan Republic citizens
equal rights. The citizens of our Republic are guaranteed the right
to work, to rest and leisure, to education, to maintenance in old
age, in sickness and in the event of complete or partial disability
as well as freedom of speech, of the press, and of demonstrations,
meetings.

Election in the Azerbaijan Republic being universal, all
citizens at the age of 18 have the right to elect. The Azerbaijan
Constitution expresses the peaceful nature of our state. Citizens
of the Azerbaijan Republic being equal before the law, their
equality is guaranteed in all spheres of economic, political, social
and cultural life.
Any direct or indirect limitation of the rights of citizens is
punishable by law.
Our Constitution consists of 5 parts; 12 chapters and 158
articles.
WAR IN AZERBAIJAN
In 1987 Armenia raised a problem of joining the Nagorny
Garabakh - region of the Azerbaijan Republic to Armenia and a
range of actions were undertaken by Armenia in this respect.
Armenians began the process of the mass expulsion of over
200000 Azeris, who had lived on the lands belonging to Armenia.
In 1988-1989 the first wave of the refugees came to Azerbaijan
from Armenia. They were old men, women and children, who
were beaten and left their own home places to save only their own
lives. These refugees don't have normal living conditions up to
the present.
Since then during more than 10 years Armenia has been
realizing the plans of the armed occupation of the Azerbaijan
territory in front of the world community with the purpose of
joining the Nagorny Garabakh Region of the Azerbaijan Repub-
