2.
The pipe-line could go through the territory of Azer-
baijan to the West, crossing the territory of Georgia to the Black
Sea port of Batumi and there through the territory of Turkey to
reach Jeyhan port.
3. The pipe-line could go through the territory of Azer-
baijan to the West, crossing the territory of Russia and incorpo-
rate into the existing system of pipe-lines running to terminals in
the city of Novorossiysk.
After long negotiations and discussions the second route has
been chosen. The realization of the second route won't be
destructed for any political reasons, as Georgia and Azerbaijan
maintain good-neighborly relations. But this route is very
expensive. The use of Batumi port will hardly enable further oil
transportation by super-tankers because the narrow straits of
Bosporus and Dardanelles arc already overloaded.
BLACK JANUARY
January 20, 1990 is known as the “Black January”. On this day
many people were wounded and many died. They sacrificed
themselves for the freedom, independence and the sovereignity of
the Republic. The 20
th
of January was a day of slaughter and it
was a bloody day.
That day Azerbaijanis went to the suburb of the city, to defend
their city, their country, their sovereignty. But they were met with
tanks and with guns. They never thought that their own army
might fire upon them, and beat them to death. But.., among the
212
killed were children, young men and old people as well.
The tragic death of Ilham and Fariza could become a legend. It
is a legend of love and death, who had been married only about
six months before.
After Ilham’s death on the square Fariza couldn’t hear the loss
she drank acid and killed herself.
The very first grave in "Shahidlar Khiyabani" is theirs. The
largest park in Baki has turned into a park of " Shahidlar
Khiyabani". The victims of the "Black January" were burried
there Peace to them.
Every year on the 20
lh
of January, hundreds of people come to
express their sorrow, grief and love for those who were killed.
Since Azerbaijan has formed its own army it has turned into a
sacred place of military men.
Every year the military oath takes place at ''Shahidlar
Khyabani". We shall not forget the young men who died in the
battle of Garabagh for integrity of our Motherland.
THE NATIONAL HOLIDAYS IN
AZERBAIJAN
There are a number of national holidays in Azerbaijan. They
are eleven now. Some of them are old but others are new.
The most favorite and oldest one is Novruz Bayrami (the
Holiday of Novruz). It has an ancient history and is usually
celebrated on the 21
st
of March every year.
We start to meet Novruz Bayrami a month before; housewives

clean and tidy their houses, cook different pastries – pakhlava,
fasali, shakarbura and many others, dye eggs red, blue, yellow,
green, brown. Children set bonfire in the evening of every
Tuesday during a month, gathering round them and singing
holiday songs and jumping over the bonifires.
On the day of Novruz Azerbaijan people are glad and happy.
They visit their relatives and friends, give them different presents.
People who are on bad terms reconcile with each other on the day
of Novruz Bayrami.
The day of Novruz Bayrami was declared a national holiday
by the Azerbaijani Government. We don’t go to work and pupils
have no lessons on that day.
Another great and old holiday in Azerbaijan is Gurban
Bayrami (the Moslem Festival of Sacrifices). It is a religious
holiday and has not fixed date of celebration. It is always
celebrated seventy days after Orujlug (Fasting). The main feature
of Gurban is killing of an animal, mostly a sheep as a sacrifice.
Every Moslem family have meat dish on that day.
The 28
th
of May is a new and great holiday for us. It is the day
of establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
The 26
th
of June is the Azerbaijan Armed Forces Day.
The 17
th
of November is the Rebirth Day of Azerbaijan.
The 31
st
of December is the Solidarity Day of all
Azerbaijanians in the world.
All these dates were declared national holidays in Azerbaijan
officially by our government. They are new holidays in
Azerbaijan.

THE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
WORK OF STUDENTS IN
AZERBAIJAN
In the age of the scientific and technological revolution the
further development of production and the society as a whole
depends more and more upon the progress of human knowledge.
The young specialist who graduates from a Azerbaijan higher
educational establishment must not only be trained to meet the
demands of modern production, science, technology and culture,
but their development. He must be creative specialist highly
qualified and capable of using the latest methods of scientific
research. This explains the fact that in higher school in the
Azerbaijan science and education have now become inseparable
from each other.
Today over a thousand Azerbaijan students are engaged in
various forms of scientific work. The practical contribution made
by students to the development of the national economy is
becoming more significant every year. Nowadays students are
co-authors of more inventions for which author’s certificates or
patents have been issued.
Scientific work is developing a spirit of independence in the
students, is helping them to understand the requirements of
industrial enterprises, to design different instruments and devices,
write term papers and diploma theses and, most important, to see
the results of their labour being introduced into production.
