Ethiopian Athletes Shine AT TCS World 10K Race


Ethiopia's Mosinet Geremew emerged the winner of the TCS World 10K race on May 17,2015 in Bengaluru as he finished the race in a time of 28 minutes and 16 seconds, two seconds clear of his compatriot and runner-up Fikadu Seboka

Suresh Kumar emerged the winner among Indian athletes. He improved the Indian men's course record of 29 : 59 second by finishing the race in just 29 minutes and 49 seconds to take home an additional record bonus of Rs 2 lakh.

Women's section of the TCS World 10K race also witnessed Ethiopian dominance as the first two places were claimed by Ethiopian athletes. Mamitu Daska won the TCS World 10K women's race as she finished the race in 31 minutes and 57 seconds. Wude Ayalew of Ethiopia finished second. Gladys Chesir of Kenya finished third. L. Surya emerged the winner among Indian women. It was the eighth edition of TCS World 10K race.

3rd Advance Estimates of Production of Major Crops for 2014-15


The 3rd Advance Estimates of production of major crops for 2014-15 have been released by the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation on May 13, 2015. Due to minor changes in the estimated production of other rabi pulses, the production estimates of rabi pulses and food-grains for 2013-14 have also undergone minor revisions

India at 100th Rankin Global Human Capital Index, 2015


India has been ranked at 100th position on a Global Human Capital Index, which measures the countries in terms of the economies leveraging their human capital, where Finland has topped the 124-nation list. On the list, compiled by World Economic Forum (WEF), other emerging economies such as Russia, China, Brazil and South Africa are ranked ahead of India.'

In the top-ten, Finland is followed by Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, New Zealand and Belgium.

According to WEF the list has been compiled on the basis of 46 indicators about "how well they are developing and deploying their human capital, focusing on education, skills and employment". The list also aims to understand whether countries are wasting or leveraging their human potential

The US (17th), the UK (19th) and Germany (22nd). Among BRICS nations, Russia comes on the top at 26th position, followed by China at 64th, Brazil at 78th place and South Africa at 92nd.

The countries with better score than India also include Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyz Republic, Chile, Philippines, Serbia, Mongolia, UAE, Macedonia, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Mauritius, Barbados, Brazil, Guatemala, Bhutan, Honduras, Cambodia, Tunisia and Bangladesh

India's Economic Growth to Surpass China's in 2015-16: UN Report


According to the mid-year update of the UN World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP), India's economic growth is projected to surpass that of China's, with the GDP expected to zoom by 7-7 per cent in 2016. Report says that India will help accelerate economic growth in South Asia

Rs. 20,000 crore Allocation for Namami Gange Scheme


Cabinet approved the flagship 'Namami Gange' programme, which integrates the efforts to clean and protect the River Ganga in a comprehensive manner. The programme has a budget outlay of Rs. 20,000 crore for the next 5 years. The amount was a significant four-fold increase over the expenditure allocated to the task of cleaning the Ganga over the past 30 years.

In order to push the efforts for the Ganga's clean-up, the Centre will now take over 100 per cent funding of various activities/projects under this programme. Marking a major shift in implementation, the government is focusing on involving people living on the banks of the river to attain sustainable results.

The programme focuses on involving the states and grassroots-level institutions such as Urban Local

Bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions for its implementation. The programme would be implemented by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), and its state counterpart organisations, that is, the State Programme Management Groups (SPMGs)

Namami Gange will focus on pollution abatement interventions, namely interception and diversion and treatment of waste water flowing through open drains via bio-remediation/appropriate in-situ treatment/use of innovative technologies/ sewage treatment plants (STPs)/ effluent treatment plant (ETPs).

Namami Gange also aims at rehabilitation and augmentation of existing STPs and immediate short-term measures for arresting pollution at exit points on river front to prevent inflow of sewage, the statement added


Cabinet Approves Stake Sale in Indian Oil, NTPC


The Union Cabinet has approved the sale of a 10 per cent stake in the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and 5 percent stake in the NTPC. The pro-posed sale of 5 per cent stake in National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is expected to fetch the exchequer around Rs. 5,500 crore, while that of 10 per cent stake in IOC would bring in nearly Rs. 8,000 crore.

As per stock exchange data, the government holds 74-96 per cent stake in NTPC and 68-57 per cent in the IOC.

It has an ambitious disinvestment target of T 41,000 crore through stake sale in public sector units, and another f 28,500 crore through strategic stake sale by transfer of management control, during the current fiscal 2015-16

India Home to 56 of the World's 2000 Powerful Companies: Forbes 2015


India is home to 56 of the world's 2000 largest and most powerful public companies, according to the Forbes' annual list which is topped by the US with its share of 579 companies. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries leads the pack of 56 Indian companies in the 2015 Forbes 'Global 2000' list.

India has added two companies to its last year's tally. Reliance Industries is ranked 142 on the list, down from last year's 135th spot, with a market value of 42-9 billion dollars and 71-7 billion dollars in sales. Reliance is followed by State Bank of India which is ranked 152 and has a 33 billion dollars market value.

The other Indian companies on the list are Oil and Natural Gas ranked 183, Tata Motors (263), ICICI Bank (283), Indian Oil (349), HDFC Bank (376), NTPC (431), Tata Consultancy Services (485), Bharti Airtel (506), AXIS Bank (558), Infosys (672), Bharat Petroleum (757), Wipro (811), A Tata Steel (903) and Adani Enterprises (944)

China's four biggest banks own the top lour spots and the South Asian giant is home to 232 of the world's largest companies, adding more spots than any other country in the world and surpassing Japan for the first time. With 218 companies, Japan slid to the third spot. The United Kingdom kept its fourth place with 95 companies


RBI Approves ING Vysya-Kotak Mahindra Merger


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the merger of Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING Vysya Bank. As per notification of RBI, all ING branches will now function as Kotak branches. The change at signage in ING Vysya branches had already begun and the process would be completed within a month. For ATMs, too, the same has started.

The acquisition will make Kotak Mahindra Bank the fourth largest private sector lender in the country, will have about 1,200 branches and a total business of Rs. 2-25 lakh crore, as on December 2014, and a combined market capitalisation of close to Rs. 1-25 lakh crore


Money Order Service Discontinued


A 135-year-old post office service to the common man comes to an end. Like in the case of the telegram, India

Post has quietly discontinued the traditional money order service, which was an integral part of the department since 1880, facilitating pan-India door-delivery of funds to a payee from over 155,000 post offices.

Post offices now have electronic money orders, or eMO, and instant money orders, or iMO, systems. Both these are much faster and simpler means to remit money. The iMO system, according to India Post, provides instant money order service for amounts ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 50,000. An instant, web-based system, money can be remitted by designated iMO post offices where an electronic version of a form is filled along with an identity proof.

In the case of eMO, money is paid at the door-step of a payee from Rs. 1 to Rs. 5,000 within a day, along with 21 standard messages. It is booked at an authorised post office and delivered pan-India from all delivery post offices. This can also be tracked on the India Post website.


CPI Basket Weights Revised, Base Year Changed from 2010 to 2012


The government has revised the base year of the All India CPI series from'2010:100 to 2012:100 starting with the January 2015 reading to be released on February 12, 2015. The weights of the sub-components within the new CPI basket will be based on the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) of 2011-12, against the old/ current basket individual weights based on CES of 2004-05.

These changes reflect the falling share of household expenditure on food and the rising share of the nonfood items. In addition, the number of items will also increase from 437 to 448 in the rural basket and from 450 to 460 in the urban basket

the weight of the Core group (CPI ex-food and fuel) will rise to 47-3% from 42-9% earlier

India Post Sets up e-Commerce Centre, Targets Online Players


India Post on April 11, 2015 launched a mobile application and an e-commerce centre at Safdarjang, New Delhi that will handle e-retailing exclusively. Equipped with modern technology, the India Post centre will be capable of handling 30,000 parcels per day. Online companies such as Amazon, Paytm, Yepme, Snapdeal and the like are already using the Postal Department's services for their parcels

India Post has over 1.55 lakh post offices, of which more than 1.39 lakh are in rural areas


Andhra Pradesh is Most Likely to Become India's Nuclear Core


With Visakhapatnam set to host BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre)-2 and GE-Hitachi collaborating with Nuclear Power Corporation to set up a cluster of six 1,600 MW reactors at Kowada in Srika-kulam district, Andhra Pradesh is fast turning into the country's nuclear core.

According to BARC Director Sekhar Basu,the 4,000-acre BARC-2 campus in Visakhapatnam will have strategic facilities, a fuel fabrication unit, futuristic accelerators and a Hiflux reactor producing large quantities of radioisotopes. Currently, the Dhruva reactor in Trombay (Mumbai) is the mainstay.

Andhra Pradesh will soon turn a key supplier of atomic fuel. At Thum-malapalle, Kadapa district, where the largest deposit of low-grade uranium ore (about one lakh tonnes) was discovered by the Atomic Minerals Division, Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) is working at full throttle to start production. UCIL is struggling to supply the 21 power plants with mining restricted to Jharkhand's Jaduguda mines. AP has also made a proposal to the Department of Atomic Energy on setting up a greenfield nuclear fuel fabrication facility in Kurnool district. This facility will supplement the Nuclear Fuel Complex in Hyderabad, the main fuel supplier

IIP Based Growth of Industrial Sector Improved Slightly in 2014-15


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 2004-05 for the month of March 2015 and 2014-15 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The General Index for the month of March 2015 stands at 197-3, which is 2-1% higher as compared to the level in the month of March 2014. The cumulative growth for the period April-March 2014-15 over the corres-ponding period of the previous year stands at 2-8%.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of March, 2015 stand at 148-5, 209-3 and 176-4 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 0-9%, 2-2% and 2-0% as compared to March 2014 (Statement I). The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-March 2014-15 over the corres-ponding period of 2013-14 has been 1-4%, 2-3% and 8-4% respectively

India's First Private Greenfield Airport at Andal Sarted Flights


India's first private greenfield airport at Andal near Durgapur becomes operational on Mayl8, 2015. Commercial operations at the facility, named the Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport (which has a capacity to handle one million passengers a year), in which Singapore's Changi has a 36-2 per cent stake, will begin on May 18, 2015

Fiscal Deficit for FY 2014-15 at 4%, Revenue Deficit at 2-8%


Prudent policies and commitment to fiscal consolidation of Gol had helped to bring the fiscal deficit down to 4 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014-15 as against the revised estimate (RE) of 4-1 per cent and actual of 4-4 per cent in 2013-14. An official press release from the Ministry of Finance said the fiscal deficit at the end of 2014-15 stood at Rs. 5,01,880 crore which is 98% of the projected figure in RE 2014-15.

The revenue deficit at the end of 2014-15 is Rs. 3,58,306 crore which is 99% of the projected figure in the RE 2014-15 and is 2-8% of the GDP as against the RE of 2-9%.J3.2% for the previous year FY 13-14)

Non-debt capital receipts, which incTu3e disinvestment, stood at Rs. 43,439 crore (103% of RE) and had shown an increase of 4% as compared to the previous year's collection of Rs. 41,865 crores

Government Relaxes FDI Norms for NRIs, PIOs,OCIs


The Union Cabinet on May 21, 2015 approved a relaxation of policy on investment proposals from Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), treating them at par with Nonresident Indians (NRIs) in this regard

New Norms Regarding Investments by PIOs and OCIs


  • Now, NRI investments would be deemed to be domestic investment made by residents.

  • This will increase investments across sectors and lead to greater inflow of forex remittance.

  • Currently, investments by NRIs are made on a non-repatriation basis; it has not been provided that these are domestic investments.

  • The proposal to tap NRIs for investments came from the Depart-ment of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

  • Last year, govt, had set up a panel to consider treating non-repatriable NRJ funds as domestic investment.

SEBI Ropes in Narayana Murthy to Head Panel on Start-ups


As it prepares a new regulatory framework for start-ups and alternative investments, regulator SEBI today set up an 18-member panel headed by IT czar N R Narayana Murthy to advise on policy matters in this regard. The Alternative Investment Policy Advisor}' Committee (AIPAC) includes representatives from the industry, private equity firms and start-up organisations, besides senior officials of SEBI, RBI and the Finance Ministry

India Tops World Hunger List with 194 million People in 2015


According to 'The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2015', published by The United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), India is home to the highest number of hungry people in the world, at 194 million, surpassing China. At the global level, the corresponding figure dropped to-795 million in 2014-15, from 1 billion in 1990-92, with East Asia led by China accounting for most of the reductions. Number of persons suffering from acute and hunger also declined in India between 1990 and 2015. In 1990-92, those who were starved of food in India number of starved people in India declined from 210.1 million in 1990-92 to 194-6 million in 2014-15.

The FAO report observes, "India has made great strides in reducing the proportion of food insecure persons in the overall population, but according to FAO, it still has over 194 million hungry persons. India's numerous social programmes are expected to continue to fight hunger and poverty." However, China stood out as the reduction in the number of hungry people was much higher than in India, which came down to 133-8 million in 2014-15 from 289 million in 1990-92.



A majority 72 out of 129 of the countries monitored by FAO have achieved the Millennium Development Goal target of halving the prevalence of undernourishment by 2015
