Leaders
•
Ensure that personnel are aware of, and comply with, this procedure.
•
Ensure the ongoing effectiveness of the procedure in controlling the
identified risk exposures in accordance with
Section 7 Monitoring and
Review
of this procedure.
Supervisors and contractors
•
Implement this procedure, ensuring that:
o
the safety signage selected is suitable for the intended purpose;
o
areas which have been identified as being hazardous are
appropriately signed;
o
workers are informed and trained with regard to the requirements for
the application of barricading and safety signage; and
o
personnel are provided with the appropriate safety equipment and
PPE to ensure signage is adhered to.
•
Ensure all workers comply with this procedure.
•
Investigate incidents arising in the application of this procedure,
implementing any necessary preventative / corrective actions following an
incident or in the identification of a risk or hazard.
Workers
•
Comply with the requirements of this procedure.
•
Report potentially hazardous areas to their Supervisor.
•
Observe and comply with all barricading and safety signage.
•
Report all incidents, near misses, risks and hazards.
•
Cooperate and contribute to incident investigations as and when required.
•
Participate in and complete all necessary training.

DEFINITIONS
Term
Definition
Barricade
A physical barrier, usually temporary, erected or placed to restrict the entry of
persons to an area and/or prevent personnel being exposed to a hazard.
Soft barricades
are those that use an approved tape to prevent or restrict
access to an area, which are suitable in situations where physical protection
by use of a hard barrier system is not warranted.
Hard barricades
are a self-supporting fence, or a self-supporting series of
continuous plastic, concrete or other solid barriers, erected or placed to restrict
the entry of persons to an area, e.g. scaffold tubes, concertina / expandable
barriers, water filled plastic or concrete modular devices.
Danger
Applied in the context of safety signs to a situation which is likely to be life-
threatening if the message is ignored.
