ABSTRACT: Bahar is a large gas and oil field in the South Caspian Sea, c. 40 km off the Azerbaijan coast at Baku The accumulation is structurally controlled, contained in a gentle anticline above a deep-seated thrust in the South Apsheron Trough. Hydrocarbons are accumulated in a thick succession of Middle Pliocene paralic clastic deposits, the Productive Series, now buried to depths of 4000 to 5000 m. The ancient Volga and Kura River deltas accumulated thick fluvio-deltaic successions in the rapidly subsiding South Caspian Basin, Porosity is reduced to c. 15-18%, mainly through compaction. Little diagenetic porosity loss is observed. Hydrocarbons originate from source rocks matured in the (early) middle oil window. There are indications that the source is of algal/lacustrine origin. Initial hydrocarbon distribution and production experience show that the reservoirs are compartmentalized, due to a combination of internal stratigraphic and fault seals. Initially tilted contacts indicate a dynamic pore fluid system. Pore fluids have escaped from large depths through a mud volcano in the southern part of the field. Eruptions have occurred in recent historic time. Bahar was discovered 1968, and production started 1970. C. 220 wells are drilled, and production, through depletion, has been primarily aimed at gas recovery but significant oil production has also taken place from the Svite Pereriv and Balakhany X intervals. A potential for increased oil recovery exists and additional reserves may be present in extensions of the field.

ABSTRACT: The central Caspian Sea was the passive continental margin north of the Tethys Sea from Middle Jurassic to Paleogene time. Sedimentation, originally part of a larger basin including the present-day Black Sea and the Greater Caucasus, records numerous carbonate and clastic depositional cycles. The southern Caspian Sea, in contrast, is a remnant Tethyan backarc basin that has been adjacent to the rapidly uplifting Greater Caucasus Mountains since the Paleogene. Marine Mesozoic and Paleogene sediments are overlain by several kilometers of Plio-Pleistocene clastics sourced from the Kura and Volga River systems. Many of these sediments were derived from the eroding Lesser and Greater Caucasus Mountains, which formed as the Arabian Plate collided with Eurasia, first closing Tethys and later the back-arc basin. Continuing closure of the southern Caspian Sea has led to the formation of major compressional folds and associated strike-slip faults. Syntectonic sedimentation has been controlled by these structures as well as by fluctuating Caspian Sea level. Sequence-stratigraphic techniques suggest the presence of fluvial, deltaic and turbidite reservoirs, both in the central and southern Caspian.

ABSTRACT: The South Caspian Basin is a tectonically active intermontane Paratethyan basin, perhaps unique among petroleum-bearing basins in that it is underlain by anomalous crust whose physical properties are comparable to oceanic material. Its thickness, seismic velocity, flexurally-defined shape, and regional tectonic history suggest that it is a fragment of Mesozoic marginal sea. For the last 5 Ma, the basin has undergone accelerated subsidence so that up to 10 km of Pliocene and younger sediment has accumulated along the northern edge of the basin, in front of the Apsheron Sill. A triangular shaped isostatic anomaly as large as -145mGal Bouguer centered on Baku and the kinematic implications of two key earthquake trends suggest that the northwestern corner of the South Caspian Basin is beginning to subduct under Eurasian continental crust, with a component of clockwise rotation relative to the Kura Basin and Caucasus Mountains to the west. Subsidence is apparently driven in part by negative buoyancy of the crystalline basement, with the sedimentary prism of the Apsheron trough equating to trench fill. The basement appears to be delaminating from the basin fill and sinking with its lithospheric mantle, while the sedimentary fill of the basin deforms independently as a result of convergence between Eurasia and Tethyan blocks. The style of deformation in the sedimentary prism is that of an unusual fold belt: very high amplitude upright folds associated with mud volcanoes and diapirs, as might be expected in a very weak and thick sedimentary succession with unusually weak detachment horizons.

ABSTRACT: Subsidence, depositional environment, type of sediments, sedimentation and erosion rates, duration of non-deposition and tectonic movements are the most important parameters in the quantification of temperature histories. To determine a near-unique temperature history, one knows the present temperature and estimates the initial value based on depositional environment and paleo-climate data. The effects of these parameters are amplified in a rapidly subsiding basin, such as the Kura Basin in Azerbaijan. High sedimentation rates result in formation of abnormal pressures and under-compaction and retard the heat transfer through sediments by lowering their thermal conductivities. As the system tries to reach hydrostatic conditions, sediments lose heat by conduction and advection. Our studies over the last twenty years have shown that the pressure changes are instantaneous as the result of the sediment loading, whereas temperature responds with a time lag. High erosion rates may cause subnormal pressures and partial decompaction of sediments. In fine sediments, fluids may not flow into the sediments at the rate of formation of subnormal pressures and this results in the collapse of these sediments. The heat content of the fluids may cause heating or cooling of the subnormally pressured sediments. Non-deposition periods allow the abnormally and subnormally pressured sediments to reach hydrostatic conditions and decrease the time lag for heat response within the sediments. Thrusting generally results in abnormal pressure formation, but the geothermal gradients are less than the ones in the systems overlain by regular sediments.

ABSTRACT: Three-dimensional geothermal and thermoelastic models of the Caucasus have been produced. Application of the three-dimensional approach to regions as complex as the Caucasus has been justified. The model calculations were made excluding the surface heat flow and could therefore be used to test the validity of the model. The theoretical heat flow agreed well with the experimental model over the Black and Caspian Sea areas and over the whole Rioni-Kura depression. As was expected areas of young volcanism presented exceptions. Charts of temperature and thermoelastic displacement were plotted for the "granitic", Conrad and Mohorovicic discontinuities.

ABSTRACT: By analogy with the extremely rich Mexican petroliferous barrier-reef La Reforma trend, and on the basis of a paleogeomorphic analysis of geologic-geophysical data, the reefal edge of the South Caspian Basin of Neocomian age has been recognized in southwestern Turkmenia; this is promising with respect to oil and gas exploration in combined (structural-reefal) traps. The extent of the reefal scarp is about 400 km in the terrestrial part, with an amplitude of up to 1500-2000 m, the width of the crest is about 5 km, and the depth of occurrence is 3000-4500 m. In its sublatitudinal part, the reef coincides with the Near-Balkhan zone of structures, productive in the Pliocene sequence. In its submeridional part, it corresponds to the so-called Shordzha-Gekcha Fault and has been built over by a Cretaceous diapiric clay swell. The paleogeomorphic plan in the South Caspian petroliferous basin, apart from southwestern Turkmenia, suggests the distribution of the marginal barrier-reef scarp beyond the water area of the Caspian Sea and the Kura Basin.--Journal abstract.

ABSTRACT: The facies and thickness of Aalenian (Jurassic) shales and sandstones indicates that they were deposited in the main Caucasian geosyncline and were derived chiefly from the Ciscaucasian geanticline to the north. The Kalkhida- Kura geanticline bordered on the south. Geotectonic conditions of this period closely resembled those of the preceding Hercynian cycle, except in Transcaucasia. An isopach sketch of Aalenian deposits is given.

SOURCE: Engineering-geology-and-the-environment-Proc-symposium-Athens-1997-Vol3. 1997; 2885-2890

ABSTRACT: The paper presents the results of calculations performed to analyze the processes of stress concentration on heterogeneities and to estimate the stability of the heterogeneous rock massif at man-made actions. The mechanical model of solid body with heterogeneities was used for the simulation. Two problems are described. The first one is the analysis of stress concentration process on the fault in Khibiny massif on Kola Peninsula. The shift along this fault caused the man-made earthquake in 1989. The mechanism of this earthquake is discussed. The second problem is the analysis of the stress concentration in the rock foundation of arch dam on Inguri river during the cyclic change of the storage lake level. The cyclic load regimes under which the accumulation of tensile stresses on rock mass heterogeneities occurs are considered.

SOURCE: Engineering-geology-and-the-environment-Proc-symposium-Athens-1997-Vol3. 1997; 2753-2755

ABSTRACT: The paper deals with the unique Inguri dam located on the Great Caucasus Southern Slope. It presents an arch with double crookedness; its height is 271.5 m, the crest of the dam being 758 m long; the foundation of the dam is composed of Upper Cretaceous carbonated rocks. Is outlined the general picture of the spreading of the systems of joints with some regularities of the filtration stream formation. Counterfiltration measures are also set forth. About 7 thousand instruments have been installed within the dam body for monitoring the current processes. Analysis of the data revealed appreciable effect upon the geological environment - considerable change of the stress-deformation state and the filtration regime. During the filling of the reservoir the rise of the dam foundation was detected for the first time. In 1986 an abrupt drain off resulted in rock-block dips that were 10 times as great as those during the previous period, though the next year the subsequent filling made it evident that the rock massif was responding in quite a different mode. Within the cement screen appeared a new system of joints and it turned out impossible to seal them with cement. 'Dam-foundation' model test showed expansion of the anomalous zone of tensile stresses, within which only plastic matters should be applied.

ABSTRACT: The Inguri arch dam is one of the largest hydraulic structures in the world. Such structures have a considerable effect on the geologic environment. The foundations of high dams, as a rule, develop active technogenic and natural geodynamic processes substantially altering their stress-strain state and seepage regime. The essence of the developing processes vague; it is difficult to obtain quantitative parameters, since there is no uniformity even in their qualitative descriptions on various dams under various geologic-structural conditions. The development of technogenic and natural processes is related not only to the size of the structure itself; it is determined mainly by the characteristics of the geologic environment. Therefore it is very important to know the regularities of the mutual arrangement of individual engineering-geologic elements and their capacity to react in one way or another to the action of the mass of the structure, reservoir, and formation of the seepage flow. When organizing any works it is necessary to examine jointly the structure-foundation or structure-geologic environment system, without separating one from the other, and in the ideal case to make a comprehensive analysis of the effect of the structures on the environment and of the environment on the hydraulic structures.

ABSTRACT: The Inguri hydroelectric power station was completed in 1986. This article discusses in detail the regrouting works, technology, and equipment used in the complete regrouting of the entire arch dam to improve its stress-strain state. Success of the operation was possible due to the development and application of new technologies including high penetrability grouts and grouts with regulated time of loss of fluidity. The stress-strain history of the dam, mathematical modelling and on-site observations, and the effects of grouting are also described. -J.M.McLaughlin

ABSTRACT: In dam construction practice in the Russian Federation, 13 high dams were constructed since 1960 with grouted joints, on two of which (Boguchany and Bureya hydroelectric stations) works are presently continuing. Of the achievements of our school of sealing high dams with grout, it is necessary to note: of the 22 dams with a height of more than 200 m constructed in the world during 65 years, four dams (approx= 17%) were constructed in the Russian Federation and countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) during the past 20 years. These are the Chirkey (height H = 232.5 m) and Inguri (H = 271.5 m) arch dams, the Toktogul gravity dam (H = 215 m), and Sayano-Shushenskoe gravity-arch dam (H = 245 m). When grouting column and section (radial) joints of high and superhigh dams, for best sealing it is important to select correctly the temperatures determrining the optimal time of injecting the cement group. It is expedient to assign the optimal temperature of sealing vertical joints between columns and sections of the dam not only during construction of the structure but also at its design stage. Therefore the data presented are of interest for civil engineers and designers. -from Authors

ABSTRACT: Comprehensive full-scale observations conducted over the course of 13 years of monitoring in the base of the Inguri arch dam make it possible to evaluate the processes of filtration deformation under the action of the changing hydraulic stress-strain state of the rock mass. This relationship is most fully manifested in the process of annual deep draw-downs of the reservoir. At that time, the rock base experiences the greatest filtration deformation, which is confined to large stratification cracks and zones of intersection of cracks of other systems with clay filler. Further observations and investigations are necessary to develop engineering measures that will alleviate or eliminate the negative action of filtration deformation on the arch dam's operation. -from Author

TITLE: Protection of the sea shore of Georgia against destruction.

AUTHOR: Zenkovich,-V.-P.

ABSTRACT: The main factors in the destruction of the sea shores of Georgia are discussed. They include inappropriate sea defence measures, the removal of material for building, the arrangement of harbour defences and the construction of a dam for hydroelectric power on the river Inguri. A new method of coastal protection is described. It is based on the restoration of beaches using river alluvium from underwater canyons and material from quarries. The action of waves on the restored beaches creates a new natural equilibrium which protects the coastline from further erosion. -P.Cooke. ACCESSION NUMBER: (0881130); 91H-08474
