Introduction
The Federal Republic of Germany is located in the center of Europe and connects the West with the East and the North with the South. Since the unification of the two German states in 1990, Europe's most populous country borders nine states. On land, it borders Denmark to the north, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France to the west, Switzerland and Austria to the south, and the Czech Republic and Poland to the east and southeast. In terms of population, Germany ranks second in Europe (after Russia) and sixth (after Russia, Ukraine, France, Spain and Sweden).
The territory of the Federal Republic of Germany is 357,022 km². The longest length from north to south in a straight line is 876 km, from west to east - 640 km. Germany is home to 82.6 million people with its cultural diversity and regional characteristics, attractive cities and landscapes. The Federal Republic of Germany is a democratic and social federal state. The state system enshrined in the Basic Law is reflected in constitutional bodies, in federalism, in law and order, and in the electoral system. They determine not only the political reality in Germany, but also the lives of people. As a member of the European Union and NATO, Germany is a partner of the states of Central and Eastern Europe that have embarked on the path of a united Europe.
Germany is made up of 16 federal states, which are independently responsible for the state of the state. Germany has always been divided into states, but over the centuries its geographical map has changed frequently. The Bundesländer in their current form was formed after 1945, partly taking into account both the traditional community of states and historical borders.
Before the reunification of Germany in 1990, the Federal Republic consisted first of 10, and then (after the restitution of the Saarland on January 1, 1957) of 11 countries formed in the occupation zones of the Western powers (USA, Great Britain, France). After the war, five countries also appeared in the Soviet occupation zone on the territory of the later GDR, but in 1952 they were transformed into 14 regions. After the first free elections on March 18, 1990, it was decided to establish five new countries in the GDR. Until 1952, they were mainly created within the borders of the GDR. On October 3, 1990, the GDR and thus the federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia were annexed to the Federal Republic. At the same time, the eastern part of Berlin was merged with the western.
The territory of Germany is divided into three main latitudes, mainly according to the type of relief - this is the North German Plain in the north, the Central German Mountains in the middle and the Alps in the south.
