GALAXY BioMill
When the team at BIOLASE began
talking about developing the new
GALAXY BioMill CAD/CAM Sys-
tem, they knew how important dentist
feedback would be to its success. The
original idea for the GALAXY Bio-
Mill came from customer feedback.
Dentists were looking for ways to
provide patients with the most tech-
nologically advanced top-notch care
possible, but also wanted something
more to differentiate their practice.
Many of them already used products
made or distributed by BIOLASE, such
as the WaterLase iPlus laser, the New-
Tom 2D/3D Cone Beam systems and
the 3Shape TRIOS scanner, but they
wanted a complete solution that could
take them from laser margin prep, to
scan, to design and to mill in a matter
of minutes.
Armed with that information, BIO-
LASE set out to develop the GALAXY
BioMill, released earlier this year, and
the LT version coming in early 2015.
This mill comes complete with lab-
grade features and precision, and when
used with the 3Shape TRIOS POD digi-
tal scanner, offers dentists one solution
to scan, design and mill chairside. It’s
part of BIOLASE’s streamlined digital
workfow solution, a solution that offers
products dentists can buy all at once or
integrate into their practice needs over
time.
The development process took about
a year, and during that time Imaging
Product Manager James Hsu stayed
connected to his dentist customers,
making sure they were creating a prod-
uct that truly met their needs.
“I take the voice of the customer and
make sure it gets to the project devel-
opment team so the end product truly
addresses what the customer needs,”
said Hsu, who’s been with BIOLASE
for three years. “You have to put your
fnger on the pulse of the customer, and
really understand their needs so you can
help them increase productivity with a
bottom-line ROI advantage. And if
you can’t make it yourself, you look for
expert partners in the industry who are
also willing to listen to the customer.”
From the start, Hsu and the rest of
the team had a frm grasp of what their
dentist customers wanted, but they
needed a little input from the lab side.
They wanted to create a commercial-
grade mill that dentists could easily use
chairside, something Hsu said hasn’t
been done before. That’s why they part-
nered with imes-icore, a German-based
CNC milling company that could help
take the system to the next user level.
That partnership, as well as the
partnership with 3Shape, is one of the
aspects of the project Hsu is most proud
of, and he’s also proud of the profes-
sional capabilities the mill provides. It
can do so much more than other chair-
side mills on the market, he said, giv-
ing dentists plenty of options, whether
they are interested in creating same-day
crowns or custom titanium abutments.
Hsu is excited about what the GAL-
AXY BioMill means for the industry,
and the advanced solutions it provides.
He loved being part of the team that put
the dentists’ needs frst to create a prod-
uct that will improve the way they prac-
tice. “Our true goal is always, always
customer frst. They asked for technol-
ogy for top-notch care, and the BioMill
provides this solution, with a true cost
savings to the practice as well,” Hsu
said. “When I feel like a product fits
that need and addresses the needs of
what our customers tell us they want,
that’s when I feel true gratifcation as a
product manager.”
