FTP for Windows and Apple Platforms - **If you already have FileZilla on the computer you are using, skip to step 3.

  1. Download the FileZilla (client) from https://filezilla-project.org/ . Select the download for all platforms. Sometimes the downloader / installer will ask you if you want to install additional programs. This is up to you; I recommend ‘no.’

  2. Install FileZilla

  3. Run FileZilla

  4. Sign in using the following credentials:

Click to sign on

Your netid

22

netid password

ssh.myweb.usf.edu

  1. May give you a warning message, click OK

  2. Your screen should look something like this. On the left are the files on your computer. On the right are the files on the USF server.

  1. On the right (USF Server) you should have a folder called public_html.

**If public_html is missing, scroll down on the right side of the window and right click on a white space. Then click ‘create directory’ and call this directory public_html Use all lower case letters. Your pathname will include your netid (not mine!)

  1. If your pubic_html was already there or you just created it, it’s a good idea to check the permissions on your folder – just to be sure they are set correctly. To do this, right click on the public_html folder and click ‘file permissions’. Yours should be set like this.

  2. The individual file permissions within the folder should be set to 644.

  3. Now it’s time to upload your files to the server. Double-click the public_html folder to open it.

  4. On the left side of your window, browse to your folder that contains your HTML Files.

  5. Drag your individual files from your computer into the public_html folder. Do not move your folder into public_html, just the individual files.

  6. Be sure that your index. html is named with all lower case letters and that the names of all of your files match your tags exactly (including capitalization – it’s best to use all small letters).

  7. When everything is uploaded – it should look something like this (you will not have the ‘OLD’ folder)

  8. Next test your web page. Close or minimize FileZilla and open FIREFOX (please check your work with this browser) and type in your URL. It will be your netid followed by .myweb.usf.edu and then a slash and the name of your web page.
If your netid is jsmith and your web page is named mypage.html, your URL will be jsmith.myweb.usf.edu/mypage.html.

In the example above, if the web page was named index.html (the default web page name), your URL could be jsmith.myweb.usf.edu/index.html or just jsmith.myweb.usf.edu. If no specific web page name is given, the browser will look for one named index.html.

You should be able to see your webpage on the Internet. Check your links and be sure all images display. There is a FAQ page in our assignment area that addresses some common problems with links and images.

Next, check your web page from a different computer – just to be sure that it works on more than one computer.

  1. Follow the project instructions and be sure you submit any required files and/or your URL to Canvas.
