10.3.1  Introduction
There are currently numerous regional coastal management
initiatives arising around the coastline under the leadership
of local planning, harbour and port authorities.  Other
locally-based coastal management initiatives, although not
strictly integrated as defined in
section 10.1.1
, are also under
way.  These include Coastal Engineering Groups (see
section
10.3.2
), which are primarily concerned with promoting
coordination and liaison between organisations undertaking
coastal works (see
section 8.4
).  In some places wider coastal
fora have developed from a range of coastal designations
and various management initiatives.  The great value of
such fora is that they bring all interest and user groups
together and enable issues of concern to be examined from
all points of view.
Table 10.3.1
lists regional coastal management initiatives,
in many of which local authorities are involved or take a
leading role.
