Sinop from its Conquest to Ottoman Era: City – Economy and Society
Abstract
After Manzikert, Suleiman Shah founded the state of Iznik in Anatolia and followed a series of
conquest policies. Sinop was one of the important part of this conquest process. Due to the Drakon
Suyu treaty (1081) which was signed between Suleiman Shah and Alexios, Byzantium handed
over many places in Anatolia to the Seljucks. Emir Karatekin, who was depended to Suleyman
Shah in those days, was working on the enlargement policy of Çankırı, Kastamonu and Sinop. As
of the date of 1085, under the leadership of Emir Karatekin, the Turkish progress in the Northwest
Black Sea region was realized, but it did not turn into a definite settlement. After the Fourth
Crusade (1204), two princes from the Byzantine dynasty -Alexis and David- settled to the Black
Sea coasts; the first in Trabzon and the other in Sinop and Ereğli. In İznik, Theodore Laskaris
founded his own state. From this point of view, Sinop which held an important role in the inter-
national trade of Anatolia, turned into a battle field between the Trabzon and the Iznik States; as
a result the commercial life in Sinop started to halt. Turkey Seljuk Sultan Kaykaus I who was
aware of the strategic importance of Sinop achieved the first permanent conquest in 1214. During
this period in the region, commercial and social life showed an improvement. During the reign of
Alaeddin Keykubad I, Sinop became a navy city which was the starting point of movement to
Soldaia (Crimea). Although the decrease of effectiveness of Turkey Seljucks started after Keyku-
bad I, the Turkish settlement continued in the region. At the time of Pervaneoğulları and Canda-
roğulları, the region kept its Turkish-Islamic region properties and the feature of being an im-
portant route of Anatolia in social and economic life. Sinop has preserved its original name
throughout history and preserved its existence with the same name. In this study, the transfor-
mation of Sinop into a Turk-Islamic city in the Seljuk and Beyliks times; the economic and social
situation of the city together with the identity of the city will emphasized.
Keywords: Seljuks, Pervaneoğulları, Candaroğulları, City, Economy.

Sinop in French Sources
Abstract
The report on "Sinop in the French Press" reveals how the notes of the excursions and researches
carried out in various periods in Sinop in the central part of the Black Sea Region are transmitted
to published newspapers, magazines and books published in France, and to contribute to internal
and external promotion, to provide resources for young researchers and to provide new research
tracks. As a result of long and self-sacrificing screenings in the press archive of the French Nati-
onal Library in Paris, many documents have been identified that focus on Sinop and contain in-
formation that reveals the historical and cultural panorama of the region (political, socio-econo-
mic and religious life and architectural and physical structures). The French press, which ran the
race of superiority with the British press until the Second World War with and without this treaty,
was the world's largest press in terms of number of organs and circulars until the 1919 Versailles
Treaty. For this reason, our paper based on the French press presents valuable information about
Sinop history, which reflects how it is viewed from the outside, as well as the international signi-
ficance of Sinop history, in terms of resource richness. As a result of classification of the infor-
mation obtained from various sources, our paper work consists of 4 separate sections.
