- Перед существительными которые становятся определяемыми с помощью дополнительных фраз или предложений :
the girl in a blue dress the teacher in the center
- Tom sits down on a chair. (мы не знаем, на какой стул) - Tom sits down on the chair nearest the door.(мы знаем, на какой стул)
Перед сущ-ми которое из-за местоположения может представлять одну особенную вещь или предмет:
Ann is in the garden. (the garden of this house)
Please pass the wine. (the wine on the table)
the door / the ceiling / the floor / the light / the carpet / the safe (in a room) /the roof / the facade / the kitchen /the garden / the bathroom (of a house).
the army / the police /the fire brigade /the airport / the station (of a town) The cinema, the theatre, the radio the ground the countryside the bank, the post-office, the doctor, the dentist
The употребляется, когда из ситуации ясно, какой конкретно предмет или лицо мы имеем в виду:
- Oh! Your house is so nice. Where is the living-room?
I went to the airport by car so as not to be late. (= аэропорт этого города)
the postman - the one who comes to us.
Has the postman come yet? He told me that he would give a letter to me
