EXTENDED ABSTRACT
Among the monument works reaching our time from Seljuk period, inn structures have a spe-
cial place. It is known that functionality is of prior importance as relating with these structu-
res, the number of which keeps on increasing as researches made are increased. The structure
which was built in Seljuk period and which is known as Karakurt Spring in Kırşehir, is one
of these examples. Due to the natural warm water resource coming from inside, Karakurt has
been planned both as an inn and as a spring facility. The most important feature that makes the
structure, being composed of accomodation and spring rooms lined around a wide yard and ha-
ving a barn, different from the other inn structures of Seljuk period, is that it has been designed
and constructed with an approach taking the warm water resource as a particular diversifying
functionality. In this study, the architectural and structural features of the construction have
been investigated in the light of documentary works realised at Karakurt inn-spring, which has
reached our time in a ruined shape, and the findings obtained during research excavations. In
that respect, by supporting the information obtained from literature research with the data ob-
tained from documentary and relief works realised at Karakurt by the author of article between
the dates of December 2015-2016, it was aimed to specify the plan typology of Karakurt and to
determine its place among other inn structures of Seljuk period. Since the construction epitaph
of Karakurt inn-spring did not reach our time, it is not precisely known when it was established.
But it was stated in the literature by some researchers that Karakurt might have been construc-
ted at the end of 13th century or the beginning of 14th century during the period of İlkhanids
and that the name Karakurt could have been originated from Zeynuddin Karacabey, as being the
head of Dulkadir principality. Besides, in the literature the researchers have taken “open” and
“closed” sections of Anatolian Seljuk inns as a measure of classification and according to these
criterion, they have grouped inns in three sections as : inns having closed section and yard, inns
having closed section without a yard, and inns with open section with yard. Furthermore, they
have divided inns as per functional based typology in two main groups as inns having only shel-
ter place and inns having shelter and services. Other than these, parfocal inns being composed
of ringed plans one inside another, have been defines as a different type. In that respect, when
existence of “open” and “closed” sections is taken as a measure, Karakurt inn-spring can be
classifed as an inn having both open and closed sections and as per functional based typology,
it is among inns having shelter and services. In the structure, the open section is composed
