Causes of chronic inflammation
Increasing evidence suggests that chronic inflammation is tied to multiple
factors surrounding our daily habits. These factors include:
Physical inactivity
When skeletal muscles contract during physical activity,
they release proteins into the bloodstream that help to reduce inflammation

throughout the body. Inactive muscles, on the other hand, lead to an
increase in pro-inflammatory molecules — a trend seen not only in breast
cancer survivors and people with diabetes but also in healthy people.
Numerous studies have shown an inverse relationship between physical
activity and measures of inflammation — in other words, the greater the
amount of physical activity, the lower the level of inflammation. Even short
bouts of exercise are known to have anti-inflammatory effects.
Unhealthy diet

Eating an unbalanced diet can lead to chronic inflammation.
A diet that’s low in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and high in sodium,
alcohol, trans fats and ultraprocessed foods can change the composition of
your gut microbiome, among other things. The gut microbiome is made up
of all of the microorganisms — including bacteria, fungi, viruses and other
tiny organisms — that normally live in your digestive tract and contribute to
internal homeostasis. An upset in the balance of these microorganisms can
ultimately lead to low-grade inflammation.
Obesity

Both diet and activity levels contribute to obesity, which is also
linked to changes in the gut microbiome and inflammation. Excessive
abdominal fat (visceral adipose tissue) is an important trigger of
inflammation. The tissue itself is an active organ with molecular processes
of its own. These processes kick off certain chemical chain reactions that
result in a proliferation of pro-inflammatory molecules and substances.
Over time, inflammation can become chronic and cause damage.
