children to join in. Maybe your family loves cheese.
Instead of giving up cheese altogether,
add slices of
apple or pear to go with it. Slice the cheese a little
thinner — you’ll still get the great flavor. This gives you
an extra serving of fruit
for the day and can become a
healthy, fun habit over time.

CHAPTER 6
For baby boomers
What about baby boomers? Is it too late to turn things around? As you enter
your 60s and 70s, it’s tempting to think that your best years are behind you.
You may be feeling some new aches and pains.
Maybe your cholesterol is
higher than you’d like, your waistline is growing or that stiffness in your
fingers is becoming more persistent.
You might be wishing you had taken better care of yourself in past years.
Maybe,
looking back, you wish you’d eaten a little more salad than steak.
Or gotten more sleep. Or taken your running shoes out more times.
But be gentle with yourself. Regret doesn’t improve your health. Action
does. And make no mistake: It’s never too late to make choices that will
improve your health.
Making healthy changes now — even if you’re over 65 —
can help you feel
as good as you did in your 40s and 50s. Even small changes,
like taking one
more bite of a healthy food or doing three minutes of vigorous exercise, can
make a difference in your daily life and improve your health span.
