Impact on national defense and military strategy
Apart from being potential threat tools, social media and internet can represent an effective
opportunity to protect national and military defense strategy or strategic interest of a state if used
properly by civil institutions, particularly by security services and by information security services.
The threats demonstrated by technological tools could be vital for security services to define and
update plans for distributing new internet technology. Besides these tools can be used by
government for community building, monitoring and for other important projects. These
technological tools can also be employed for defense activities such as prevention, warning,
institutional communication, crisis management and counter-propaganda and offensive activities
like influence, propaganda and deception.
Continuous and deep monitoring of this media can be carried out as a warning tool in case of
present and future threats to national defence, since the use of social media by criminal
organizations, terrorist groups, adversary states and other competitors is more and more increasing.
Single individuals can use internet not only for strictly personal purposes, but also for the interests
and purposes of the organized group they are part of. In this case, the single members (in terms of
connection, link, etc.) of these organized bodies are to manage the official accounts and become the
factual users of social media on behalf of the entire group, pursuing the purposes and protecting the
interests of the group itself. In order to use internet and social media for military purposes it needs
to establish the monitoring between representatives of media and internet by using the capability of
Info Ops and PSYOPS members. Moreover, while developing the military strategy all above
mentioned threats should be taken into consideration for farther development.
