ALEXANDER S. CAVANAGH, JR. AWARD: To a Senior for excellence in journalism. This year’s recipient devoted many hours to the successful completion of the school newspaper. She has dedicated herself to the school newspaper for 4 years, including 2 years as editor-in-chief: Kathleen Williamson
RICHARD RICE AWARD: Given in memory of Mr. Richard Rice to a senior who has evidenced in his life a search for truth and dedication to Church; one who is known among his peers as a listener and a peacemaker; one who is able to express his feelings through the arts: Brandon Marshall

* In addition, Brandon has received the Archdiocesan Discipleship Award for 2008. This award recognizes a Catholic youth who has exercised his baptismal call, served as a role model in terms of Mass attendance and Catholic social teachings, selflessly serving his peers with unwavering commitment and dedication.

MUSICAL COMPETITIONS
At the Heritage Music Festival in Washington DC, NWC musical groups received the following distinctions:

Women’s Choir: 2nd Place, Silver Medal

Concert Choir: 2nd Place, Silver Medal

Jazz Choir: 1st Place, Silver Medal

Wind Ensemble: 1st Place, Bronze Medal

Jazz Band: 1st Place, Gold Medal

Outstanding Instrumental Soloist for entire festival: Christopher Brown

At the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston, MA, NWC musicians received the following distinctions:

2008 USA BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD: For outstanding achievement in the 2008 USA Biology Olympiad, a certificate is awarded to Hannah Pelton.
GOVERNOR’S SCHOLARS AWARD PROGRAM: This program recognizes academically talented high school students. From all Connecticut high schools, 30 Scholars are selected on the basis of PSAT scores, academic achievement, and an original essay. NWC is extremely proud this year that Nicole Boucher has been selected as one of the 30 finalists.

PAIGE ANN CORRIGAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Mrs. Corrigan was an inspiring teacher, loyal friend, and positive role model. Her devotion to teaching and to the students highlighted her eight years as a faculty member. This scholarship is a permanent memorial created by her colleagues to honor Mrs. Corrigan for the caring and loving teacher she was. The Paige Corrigan Scholarship Award is given annually to a current student who has demonstrated a keen interest in mathematics and represents the standards and values of Northwest Catholic High School: Margaret Tuite
GHCEA AWARD: Each year, the Greater Hartford Catholic Education Association, which represents the lay teachers at Northwest Catholic, East Catholic, St. Paul, and Sacred Heart High Schools, presents the Barbara Banville/David McCreesh Scholarship. 2008 FALL ATHLETIC PRACTICES
The NWC Fitness Center will be open and supervised for student use at 8:30-10:30am

and 5:00–7:00pm, Monday through Friday from June 23 to August 15.


FOOTBALL CONDITIONING (No Pads) Includes Grade 9

Mon., Aug.18 through Fri., Aug. 22; players report at 3:00pm; workout from 6:00-8:00 pm


FOOTBALL PRACTICE (Full Pads)

Friday, Aug. 22 to Monday, Aug. 25 at Camp Fuller

GIRLS SOCCER

Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon (new players only); 5:00-7:30 p.m. (all players) at St. Thomas Seminary. Any questions, please call Coach Todd Sadler at 203-715-2451.



BOYS SOCCER
