179 Yokohama Beach 4 5 R+rocks 4500 ft
Beach 179, Yokohama Beach, is the last and northernmost beach on the Leeward coast, and also marks the end of the highway, with a footpath continuing north of the beach along the old railway line for 3 mi to Ka’ena Point, the northwest tip of the island. The 4500 ft long sandy beach is located across the mouth of a shallow valley, with steep slopes rising to over 1300 ft behind and to the north. The beach faces southwest and receives both south and west swells. The shore is a continuous, steep sandy beach, bordered in the south by raised reef, with a 150 ft long section of beachrock 300 ft to the north, and a central section of shallow reef in front of the lifeguard tower, which is also the site of the main Yokohama surf break, just off the beach. The northern half of the beach is dominated by beachrock and reef, with the Second Dip and Third Dip breaks located over reef close to the shore, adjacent to drainage dips in the backing road.
Raised reef continues north of the beach to the Moi Hole, a popular fishing spot, gradually grading into the basalt that forms the base of the ridge all the way to Ka’ena Point.

No. Beach Rating Type Length
Shore Outer
180 Flat Island 3 7 R+reefs/rocks 300 ft
181 Mokulua islands 3 4 R+fringing reef 150 ft
Flat Island and the Mokulua Islands are located off the southern end of Kailua and Lanikai beaches, respectively, and are readily accessible from the shore.
Beach 180, Flat Island, is a small 2.5 acre area of raised reef, little more than 3 ft above sea level. The island is located 1600 ft off the southern end of Kailua Beach and is bordered by fringing reefs to either side and offshore. The reefs lower waves to generally less than 3 ft around the island. The entire island is surrounded by overhanging bluffs cut into the raised reef, with the exception of a small 150 ft long patch of sand located on its southeast side. Many people paddle canoes and other watercraft out to the beach to wander around the island. The Flat Island surf break is located off the eastern side of the island.
Beach 181, The Mokulua Islands, are two adjoining 230 ft high volcanic islands located on the outer edge of the fringing reefs off Lanikai Beach, and are exposed to the full forces of the trade wind waves. The easterly waves break heavily on the rocky eastern side of the islands and surge through the 1000 ft wide gap between the islands before refracting around both islands to collide at their front. The converging waves have deposited the only beach on the islands, a small 300 ft long spit of sand attached to the southern side of the northern island. While the beach is usually calm, the exposed rocky shores of the island are very hazardous and people have been washed off and drowned. The beach attracts many people who kayak out from Kailua and Lanikai beaches. However, the island above shoreline is a seabird sanctuary and entry is prohibited.
