1) Embolic nephritis (suppurative glomerulitis)
∙
caused by bacteremia, usually in young animals; especially pigs (
Actinobacillus suis
) and foals (
A.
equuli
);
∙
in acute cases, there is multifocal suppurative glomerulitis / nephritis → microscopically, bacterial
colonies can be readily seen in glomerular and interstitial capillaries (bacterial colonies are often
seen in other organs as well);
∙
if the animal survives, the focal lesions may progress to grossly visible renal abscessation.
2) Glomerulonephritis (GN)
∙
glomerulonephritis and glomerulopathy are a heterogenous group of diseases in which the
morphologic change takes place primarily in the glomeruli → secondary tubulointerstitial and
vascular changes;
∙
“glomerulitis” is used when inflammation is restricted to the glomeruli, but usually the inflammation
eventually extends to the rest of the nephron.
