RESEARCHING OUR ROOTS
Genealogy is an appealing hobby for many people these days. In previous columns we saw how various websites can reveal the names of our ancestors, places where they lived, and how to learn more about those places.
The “MacLennan Family-sharing” part of our worldwide website is still “under construction”. It concentrates on Mc/MacLennans, their spouses and their children – especially those born before 1900. Our present emphasis is on Scottish Mc/MacLennans, going back as far as records permit. Work on this project has progressed well with many thousands of couples being verified against the Scottish marriage records and “joined up”. Verification information on all sources is being included in the “Notes” associated with many individuals.
Over the next three editions of the newsletter we will forward an invitation to contribute to this project by advising your immigrant ancestor, the McLennans before and after. Where possible we would be pleased to receive copies of certificates to support the births deaths and marriages shown.
The resource will be available to subscribers of Clan associations following the “launch” at the Clan Gathering at Inverness in July.
I recently came across one of the earliest clansmen in both Australia and New Zealand. Duncan McLennan arrived in Australia in 1837 and migrated on to New Zealand in 1840. He married in Auckland in 1850 and settled at Papakura just south of Auckland. When the first Presbyterian clergy arrived they used the home of Duncan and Ann McLennan. A plaque in the Papakura Presbyterian Church reads:- "In loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McLennan in whose home Presbyterian Services were first held in this district in 1854. Conducted by Rev D Bruce". Rev Dr David Bruce later became the Moderator of the Church in Australia.
Duncan’s parents were Alexander McLennan and Mary McRae of Kintail. His brothers, Ewen McLennan (born abt 1807), and Donald McLennan (bn abt 1809), accompanied him to New Zealand on the “Diana” - arriving before Auckland was established. We would be pleased to hear more about this family.
Euphemia McLennan from Skye, some of the earliest settlers in that district. They arrived at Geelong in 1852 with their children John, Margaret, Murdoch, Roderick and Agnes. “Piper John”, as the son became known, was the father of the “Sanguine Scot” of “We of the Never Never”. John did not go with the others to Taralga, he farmed near Marnoo, Vic. A separate article appears in this issue (page 15) about The Sanguine Scot’s son, William (“Billy”) – “a proud Larrakia Man” – the same name as his great grandfather.
Just a few days ago an episode of “Coast – Living beyond the edge” featured the “Great Eastern” – by far the largest ship built in the 1850’s. The Chief Engineer for the construction was Alexander McLennan CE (1824-1893), who later was also asked to serve as engineer on trialling voyages. An earlier article described his memorial in Liverpool’s large Anfield Cemetery – the only heritage-listed memorial there. In later years the “Great Eastern” was large enough to hold all the cable to lay the first working telegraph cable across the Atlantic. The program’s producers found an enthusiast who had made a working model of the ship.
It was a great pleasure to learn from long-time Victorian clanswoman Janet McDonald about her ancestor Hector McLennan born about 1796. His son also called Hector (1824-1886), had a son William who was involved in founding Melbourne’s Braille Library. The brother of Hector Snr, Alexander McLennan, had joined the 79th Regiment (known as the Cameron Highlanders) and served in Ontario for many years before marrying there and having a family. He died in Innisfil, Ontario, in 1888. (I am grateful to Melanie McLennan in Canada for tracking this down) Subsequent research has revealed that two other descendants of this Hector also have families in Australia – Alfred McLennan (1864-1940) spent many years on sailing ships and has written a wonderful book about his experiences. (1857– 1923), ), married in Adelaide and settled in Melbourne. Hector was a shore manager for Howard Smith (Shipping) while his brother Harold was a Mate on their ships.

In particular there will be two “Special Interest Groups” – one for those with ancestors in Contin/Strathconon/Urray and the other for Gairloch/Applecross. I would be pleased to receive documents supporting the relationships between husband and wife (such as marriage certificates) and with their children (birth certificates). Death certificates and similar documents are also a big help in getting the right people connected up! Please keep in mind we are presently only focussed on Mac/McLennans and their spouses/children born before 1900.

John (or Jock") McLennan was known as "The Sanguine Scot" in the 1902 autobiographical book "We of the Never Never" by Jeannie Gunn giving her experiences at "Elsey Station" near Mataranka, Northern Territory - she changed the names of people to obscure their identities.
‘LEST WE FORGET’ “Bill” McLennan was the uncle of our father, and former Committee
Clansman, William John McLennan (deceased). “Bill” gave his age as 43 years and six months
when he enlisted at Warrnambool on the 7 August 1916, as part of the drive for reinforcements as a result of the many tens of thousands of Australian casualties that had occurred during the Gallipoli campaign and the wholesale slaughter of the Somme battlefields. In fact, “Bill” had been born in 1869 and was already about three years even older than the age he gave. His service number was 5878 and he served in 24th Battalion.
He was one of seven children born to Kenneth McLennan and Sarah Alsop who had married in Victoria in 1866. Kenneth McLennan had been born about 1828 in London. His father was one of several McLennan watchmakers there. Kenneth had died in Warrnambool in 1905. “Bill” had both a sister and a daughter with the unusual name of Zapporah McLennan.
“Bill” McLennan survived the war and returned home in 1918 to his wife and three children at Warrnambool. We know that Bill is buried at Warrnambool Cemetery, however despite some research, no death date has yet been found. By John & Phil McLennan
