Kazakh national heroic epos "Koblandy-batyr"
Summary
In the "Koblandy-batyr" epos, the most popular epic
sample of the Kazakh people, is described heroes`
loyalty to
their homeland, that are distinguished by high moral qualities –
their wisdom, strength and courage; the struggle for the
liberation of their native land from foreign invaders.
Eposes, which are an important part of the spiritual life of
the Kazakh people, have deep roots. It should be noted that the
courage and heroism of the Turkish heroes are reflected in the
Orkhon-Yenisei and epitaphic inscriptions dating back to the
V-VIII centuries. In particular, the most ancient Kazakh heroic
eposes refer to the VIII-X centuries, the period of the
disintegration
of
patriarchal-feudal
relations.
Ethnic
consolidation of tribes, emergence of legends about tribal
battles and resettlement of tribes in different territories are the
basis of Kazakh eposes. The development and formation of the
epic style of these eposes is associated with heroic
personalities. Among the Kazakh people we often see the
names of such epic heroes as Koblandy, Kambar, Alpamysh,
and others.
Numerous
intertribal
quarrels
and
disagreements
occurring in the XV-XVI centuries led to the fall of the Golden
Horde. After this period the Kazakh people and its statehood
emerged. After a while, in the XVII-XVIII centuries, the
Dzungar-Kalmyk feudal lords began to carry out occupational
raids in the Kazakh lands.
The processes occurring in this period were completed by
the full formation of Kazakh eposes. Battles between the
Dzungar Kalmyks and Kazakhs have been reflected in such
epic samples as "Yor-Targin", "Yer Kokshe", "Karabey",
307
"Utegen-batyr", "Arhalyg-batyr", "Urak-Mamai", "Shora-
batyrs", etc.
"Koblandy-batyr" epos, consisting of 6-9 thousand lines,
has an important place in a series of epic samples of the
Kazakh people. In the introductory part of the work,
unexpected birth of the hero is typical for Turkic eposes. Twins
– Koblandy and his sister Gurtka were born. Koblandy grows
rapidly and attracts attention for his legendary heroism,
courage, endurance. When he was a child – 6 years old,
saddling his horse, he went to Estemis who was a stable boy
and taught archery, horse riding, heroism and shooting from
him.
Koblandy`s marriage, rearing of his horse and other epic
events are described within the traditions of heroic epos. His
first heroic feat is connected with the fight for the sake of his
beloved girl. After the victory, he takes the beautiful Gurtka to
his native land. In his heroic biography, smart and beautiful
Gurtka plays an important role.
Koblandy`s true heroism in many successive battles
against foreign invaders (Gizilbash and Kalmyks) is at the
centre of epos and his first heroic battle is against Gizilbash
Gazan Khan.
In the "Koblandy-batyr" epos as in the epic poems of the
Turkic and other peoples of the world, the main feature of the
storyline is not connected with the personal interests of the
hero, but with his public duty. After all, indivisibility of the
homeland, the calmness and well-being of his people is very
important for Koblandy, attacking to Gizilbash, Kalmyks and
Kipchak lands, conducting a merciless struggle against Gazan
Khan and Alshagir. In epos, all the details of the image of
Koblandy serve as the main function of the epic hero. All his
activities are connected with the public interest, and therefore
he is always more valiant in his actions, fighting qualities,
valor.
308
The heroism of Koblandy is so monumental, his strength
is so inexhaustible that the enemy army consisting of 40,000
people looks like 40 people in his eyes, the earth shakes from
his roar, stones and rocks break down. When he enters the
battle, his eyebrows are covered with snow and his eyelashes
with ice. He is like wrought iron.
In the epos, artistic and visual means characteristic for
the Turkic eposes are widely used. Trails used in various
episodes (scenes) related with the hero, create a memorizing
effect. Among the trails in this type is compared a hero with
wild animals and birds: a lion, a tiger, a wolf, a falcon. Due to
this, the love of the people for the hero is endless.
At the same time, he is judicious, brave, talented ruler for
his parents, lover and people. In the epos, hyperbolas are
widely used for describing the heroism of Koblandy, his horse
named Tayburyl in battles and horse competitions. The
traditional comparisons and epithets used in the epos,
demonstrate not only hero, but also the beauty and high
qualities of his horse. For example, Tayburyl's forehead is
likened to the moon; it runs faster than gazelle, deer and etc.
Fighting friends of Koblandy are also described in the
spirit of epic traditions.
These images, being generalized, serve to reveal the true
heroism characteristic for the hero. Among them are the images
of Bukenbay, the son of Koblandy, and Garaman, a colleague
of Koblandy. Bukenbay, like his father, resembles a lion in the
epos.
Estemis is presented as a servant of the khan, a stableman
and an educator of a young hero. According to the external
description, he is presented at the level of the hero and warrior.
The descriptions are within imaginary means.
In "Koblandy-batyr" epos, in accordance with epic rules,
numerous enemies of the hero differs their strength and skill.
Some of them are presented ironically. For example, Alshagir`s
309
relative, giant Gyzyler and his sons Aganas and Toganas. They
are mighty as the Garaspan Mountain; Gazan Khan is
compared with high mountain pass and it is mentioned that he
is origin of khan. Despite the generality of the images, the epos
abounds with hyperboles. M. Auezov and L. Sobolev noted
that enemies of Koblandy – Gazan, Alshagir and Kobikta are
endowed with individual peculiar features.
Along with other episodes (the birth of the hero, the
choice of the stallion in the herd, the battles against the
enemies, his captivity, etc.), the love line plays an important
role in the work. Here, as the initial knot, we should note the
first meeting between Koblandy and Garlyga, the daughter of
the Kobikty. At first sight Garlyga falls in love with the
Koblandy.
We should also note that Garlyga's mother, being a
Muslim, was at one time captured in the result of raids by
Kobikty on the Kipchak lands. While dying Garlyga's mother,
bequeaths her daughter to marry with the Kipchak Muslim and
the girl betrays his father by getting married with Koblandy
and fullfils the will of the mother. On the next plot line, the
mutual love feelings between Koblandy and Garlyga are more
described. Hence, the second line in the biography of the hero
begins. Here, the basis of the collision is intertwined with the
ancient motif, characteristic for heroic epic tales, which leads
to hero's tests in the struggle for the future wife. At the same
time, in the "Koblandy-batyr" epos the ancient story line
undergoes many changes, that is, in this competition the
victory for Garlyga is gained not by the Koblandy, but by his
son Bukenbay. After that, in some episodes Garlyga struggles
for the love. To achieve love, she releases Koblandy and
Garamana from the dungeon, arranges their safe escape.
Let us note that the assistance rendered by the daughter
of the enemy to the captive hero is a characteristic feature of
ancient epic traditions. With such moments we meet in such
310
heroic
eposes
as
"Kitabi-Dede
Gorgud",
"Koroglu",
"Alpamysh", in the romantic poem "Yusif and Ahmed", etc.
Although in the "Koblandy-batyr" epos we meet with
the"symptoms "of the traditional plot, at the same time, there is
a deep psychologism in using this line. To express his
boundless love for Koblandy, Garlyga shows the hero a weak
point in his father's helmet, and Koblandy, taking aim at this
point, kills the Kobikty. Besides, Garlyga helps Koblandy in
the battle with Alshagir-khan and in other battles with the
enemies.
The composition and content of the "Koblandy-batyr"
epos, the system of artistically expressive means, and the
construction of the verses reflect the traditions inherent in the
heroic eposes.
From the point of view of the structure, the epos consists
of several episodes arranged in the chronological sequence,
creating a single holistic narrative. Used in epos, numerous
artistic-figurative formulas serve to convey various feelings,
the mood of the hero. The Exclamations play a great role in
strengthening the expressiveness of the narrative. For example,
feelings, moods, sadness of a hero during an unsuccessful
battle are given through special expression. Exclamations are a
kind of emotional load and create a unique effect.
The "Koblandy-batyr" epos abounds with religious
concepts, excited exclamations, appeals to sacred objects,
religious foci, prophets, God. From this point of view one can
see many moments that are similar with the Karakalpak heroic
epic "Forty girls" ("Kyrk kyz"). In the poetic speech of the
heroes, you can often find such names as the Prophet Ali,
Hazrat Ali, Ikhlas-ata, Shashti Aziz, Giyas, Ilyas, Davud, the
Prophet Muhammad, Bibifatima, etc. The eposes also reflect
fragments related to Islam, the Koran, verses from the Koran,
cults, rituals, and traditions. In addition, the use of concepts
related to cults, prayer, worship, religious rituals makes it
311
possible to evaluate this work as an original example of
Kazakh ethnic-national thinking. Many expressions and
phrases used in the epos are instructive.
Important forms of dialogical and monological speech
are widely used in the composition of epos. An important
element that ensures the expressiveness of epos is the skilful
use of syllabic rhythm, tact, alliteration, refrains (repeating
lines), intonations, and this factor makes possible to evaluate it
as an important sample of ethnic-national consciousness. For
this reason, the "Koblandy-batyr" epos demonstrates Kazakh
folklore and the spiritual wealth of the people.
