La Pérouse, who had disappeared in the late 1700s.  [His 

ship’s wreckage was finally found on Vanikora of the 

Solomon Islands.]

Fendler, Augustus (1813-1883).  

German-born botanist who came to United States in 1836; 

hired as a botanical collector by Asa Gray at Harvard, and 

joined J.W. Abert on the military reconnaissance to Santa 

Fe in 1846; explored the environs of Santa Fe April-August 

1847, collecting most of his plants on the west mesas and 

along Santa Fe Creek, never venturing farther than 12 miles 

from the town on account of Indian hostilities; the account 

of his collections in New Mexico were published in Gray's 

well-known Plantae Fendlerianae Novi-Mexicanae (1849); 

about 125 new species of plants were collected by Fendler 

in New Mexico; also collected plants for Gray in western 

United States, Venezuela, Panama, and Trinidad.

Gerard, John (1545-1612).  

English surgeon and pharmacist who produced the Herball 

or Generall Historie of Plantes (1597), which was part 

translation and part adaptation of a work by the Belgian 

Rembert Dodoens.

Gray, Asa (1810-1888). 

Preeminent American botanist of his time, and perhaps to 

this time; professor of Natural History at Harvard 

University and a spirited rival of colleague Louis Agassiz; 

author of Flora of North America (with John Torrey), 

Manual of Botany of the Northern United States (1848, five 

editions), Elements of Botany, Introduction to Structural 

and Systematic Botany, How Plants Grow, Synoptical 

Flora of North America (uncompleted), and technical 

papers describing hundreds of new species; benefited from 

network of professional collectors and amateur naturalists 

from all over North America; vigorous proponent of 

Darwinism and champion of phytogeographical affinities of 

northeastern United States and eastern temperate Asia; as 

far as is known, never visited New Mexico.

German botanist at Göttingen and director of the botanic 

garden; author of Flora of the British West Indian Islands 

(1864) and studies in Gentianaceae.

Celebrated Austrian (Bohemian-born) agrostologist and 

educator; contributed “Gramineae” to Die Naturlichen 

Pflanzenfamilien (1887) and authored Monographia 

Andropogonearum (1889).

Hall, Elihu (1822-1882). 

Botanical collector and farmer from Illinois who visited 

Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon, and Texas; organized Illinois 

Natural History Society (1858); joined Charles C. Parry 

and J.P. Harbour on 1862 expedition to Colorado, during 

which he ascended Pike’s Peak on July 1; Jones (1930) 

termed him “an indefatigable collector.”
