Health and wellbeing is determined by many factors, for example; Lifestyle e.g. diet, alcohol
consumption, and levels of exercise. For example, individuals who are obese increase their
risk of developing heart disease by 46%, while in those who are physically inactive the risk is
increased by 37%. In fact, many diseases and cancers are easily preventable through
adopting healthier lifestyle behaviours.
Wider determinants; such as poverty, employment, education, housing and hereditary traits
will also determine the overall health and wellbeing of a population. Similarly, many of these
factors are positively influenced by good health and wellbeing.
As such, any measure, whether currently performing positively or negatively, needs to be
understood in the context of others. For instance, whether a mother chooses to breastfeed
her baby
will impact upon the health of mother and child, and the child’s risk of developing
problems such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol; which in turn will
increase that child’s risk in adulthood of heart disease or having a Stroke; whic
h could
consequently result in premature mortality.
Ward Health Summary compared with Derby City
Arbo
retum Ward is Derby’s most deprived neighbourhood, with the highest levels of
health deprivation and disability, and income deprivation affecting older people.
Life expectancy in this Ward is the lowest, by some 13 years in males and 12.5
years in females, compared with the highest life expectancies in Derby.
The rate of mortality at any age from any cause in Arboretum is the highest in the
city, as is the rate of premature mortality from Cardiovascular diseases
–
CVD is a
group of conditions comprised mainly of Coronary Heart Disease and Stroke, and is
the most common cause of death in the UK. Nearly all deaths from CHD are from a
heart attack (someone dies from having a heart attack every 6 minutes in the UK),
and require a great number of hospital admissions.
In Arboretum, emergency hospital admissions for CVD and Stroke are significantly
higher than expected for the population, and the highest seen in Derby.
While significantly fewer people are estimated to binge drink in this Ward,
significantly more individuals are likely to smoke which increases the risk of CHD by
nearly 20%.
Cholesterol is another big risk factor for CHD, and will increase ones risk of
developing the disease by some 46%. Cholesterol disorders are extremely
common in South Asian communities
–
due to a combination of diet, inactivity and
hereditary traits. South Asians are more prone to developing heart disease at a
young age so bringing cholesterol under control as soon as possible in these
communities, is a public health priority.
Significantly more women breastfeed their babies at 6 weeks
–
which is not only the
best form of nutrition for baby, but protects the health of mother too.
Arboretum has the highest rate of adult A&E attendance, of any Ward in Derby.
