Itar-Tass: Over 400 flights cancelled in Russia after Eyjafjallajokull eruption

MOSCOW, April 19 (Itar-Tass) -- A total of 411 flights have been cancelled and 77 more delayed in Russia’s airports as of 09:00 Moscow time on Monday after the eruption of a volcano on the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier in Iceland, which began last Wednesday, a source in the Russian Air Transport Agency told Ita-Tass.

“Some 35,000 passengers could not take off to European countries. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport accounts for the bulk of this figure – 28,500 passengers. A total of 277 flights from Sheremetyevo have been cancelled and 77 postponed. As many as 27 flight have been cancelled from Moscow’s Domodedovo airport (16 delayed), and nine flights have been cancelled from Vnukovo, also outside Moscow (two flights have been delayed),” the source said.

“St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo airport has cancelled 91 flights. Europe-bound flights have also been cancelled or delayed from Kaliningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, and Tyumen. Other airports are operating as scheduled,” the source went on.
