Geographical Codes of Turkish Culture in Sinop:  
Büyükkızık and Küçükkızık Village and Dağköy (Dikmen) 
 
Abstract 
Geographically  earth  has  been  a  source  of  scientific  study  throughout  history  with  the  cultural 
characteristics that develop on place.  The living geographical environment affects the economic 
activities of the people living in that geography, it also affects their culture and makes it different 
from other places economically, socially and culturally. One of the sources that will shed light on 
the  history and development  of Sinop and its surroundings of the Turkization and Islamization 
period  is the rural settlements that house and  enrich the  values that symbolize Turkish  culture. 
With  this  study,  it  is  aimed  to  reveal  the  values  belonging  to  the  Turkish  Islamic  culture  in 
Dağköy, Büyükkızık and Küçükkızık villages established by the Kızıklar and Oğuz villages which 
are  important  in  the  Turkization  of  Anatolia.  In  addition,  geographical  environmental  factors 
which are effective in locality settlement of the Turkmen belonging to the Kızık tribe  is among 
the  aims  of  putting  the  effects  of  these  factors  on  Turkish  culture.  In  order  to  reach  the  stated 
objectives, literature was searched, the locality was visited in various dates, the values symboliz-
ing the Turkish culture in the region were photographed and negotiated with the local people. The 
finds show that region has tombs with various forms and wooden mosque and handwritten Quran 
and hand weavings and clothing and food culture which symbolize the Turkish culture.

Öz 
Yerleşim  alanları  ve  özellikle  onun  çekirdeğini  oluşturan  evler,  kültürel  kimliğin  üretildiği  ve 
uygulandığı birincil alanlardır. Bu nedenle sosyologlar, antropologlar ve bir kısım coğrafyacılar 
kültür  ve  kimlik  araştırmalarında,  evlerin  rolünü  ve  yol  gösterici  özelliklerini  incelemişlerdir. 
Özellikle geleneksel kırsal evler, doğal çevre faktörleriyle uyum içerisinde gelişen ve geçmişten 
günümüze kadar gerek kendi üyeleri tarafından ve gerekse komşu kültürlerle etkileşim sonucunda 
ortaya  çıkan  kültürel  birikimin  en  güzel  sergilendiği  mekânlardır.  Nitekim  bu  evler,  toplumun 
ihtiyaçlarına göre nasıl şekillendiğini, plan tiplerinin gelişiminde aile yapısının ve birey sayısının 
etkisini, gerçekleştirilen ekonomik faaliyetlerin ve ihtiyaçlarının ne tür eklentiler ortaya çıkardı-
ğını, dini inanış ve yaşantının etkisini, kadının toplum içerisindeki yerini gösteren önemli deliller 
sunmaktadır. Sinop, Karadeniz Bölgesinin Orta Karadeniz Bölümü içerisinde bulunan ve ülkemi-
zin de en kuzeyinde yer alan ilimizdir. İklim ve bitki örtüsü özelikleri gibi doğal çevre faktörleri-
nin  sahadaki  ev  mimarisinin  oluşmasında  etkisi  olmakla  birlikte,  uzun  yıllar  boyunca  yörede 
hâkim olan Türk ve Müslüman kimliğini bünyesinde barındıran kültürel geçmişin de bu noktada 
önemli payı bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada da, Sinop’taki geleneksel ev mimarisinin özellikleri, 
onu ortaya çıkaran kültürel ve coğrafi faktörler bağlamında ele alınmıştır.

Traditional Sinop Houses for Cultural Geographical Characteristics 
 
 
Abstract 
The settlements and especially the houses that make up its core are the primary areas where cul-
tural  identity  is  produced  and  applied.  For  this  reason,  sociologists,  anthropologists  and  some 
geographers  have  studied  the  role  and  guiding  characteristics  of  houses  in  culture  and  identity 
researches. Particularly traditional rural houses are the most beautiful places that show up in har-
mony with the natural environment factors and the cultural accumulation that has emerged from 
past to present as a result of interaction with neighboring cultures as well as by their members. 
As  a  matter  of  fact, these  houses  provide  important  evidence  showing  how  women  are  shaped 
according to the needs of the society, the influence of family structure and the number of indivi-
duals in the development of plan types, the effects of realized economic activities and needs, the 
effects of religious belief and experience. Sinop is located in the Central Black Sea Sub-Regional 
of the Black Sea Region and is the most northern part of our country. In addition to being influ-
ential in the formation of the house architecture of the natural environment factors such as climate 
and plant cover characteristics, the cultural past which has the identity of Turkish and Muslim, 
who has been a judge in the region for many years, also has an important role in this point. In this 
study, the characteristics of the traditional house architecture in Sinop are taken up in the context 
of the cultural and geographical factors that uncovered it.
