Это время равно(present cont)в прошлом.
Direct speech: He said, “I am living in London”.
Indirect speech: He said he was living in London.
The man said that workers weren’t picking cotton.
Как и (pres cont) может выражать запланированные действия в будущем
Present: I am leaving tonight. I‘ve got my plane ticket.
Past: He was busy packing, for he was leaving that night (The decision to leave had been made some time previously.)
С always для временных быстропроходящих действий:
He was always ringing me up.
He was always working.
e) в некоторых случаях (past cont ) может использоваться вместо past simple
It snowed this afternoon.
It was snowing this afternoon.
С этими словами today, last night, in the afternoon, используется чтобы показать что это обычное привычное действие .
I was talking to Tom the other day. (It was not unusual)(no matter who began the dialog)
I talked to Tom.(means I took the incentive)
From four to six Nom was washing the car. (This was a casual, routine
action)
From 4 to six Tom washed the car.(deliberate action by tom )
What were you doing before you come here?(sounds more polite)
What did you do before you come here?
