Week 6 EAP Formative Assesment

Reading and understanding multiple authentic academic sources that have been published in Academic Journals and Academic Presses such as Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press which are well-known around the world. While reading the Academic material even if it is not easy to catch the meaning of words one by one, with the help of tasks at the end students can identify important features of the texts including the main ideas or specific language used in the source. Reading academic texts enables to distinguish variety of academic genres which are really necessary for academic writing in the next modules. Lastly, there are references provided at the end of articles that can be done further research on the next given topic.

  • Listening to academic lectures and presentations. The main problem of most EAP students was understanding lectures, particularly, the speaker’s intentions. Holes (1972). Thus, in the EAP program different academic topics and useful academic video talks are given that help you comprehend key information and language. While you are watching the videos provided in Canvas platform or classroom, you will enhance note-taking skill which is a key part of most modules. Also, during the sessions you give will be given critical thinking questions about the content of the lecture videos.

  • Academic writing. As Charles and Pecorari (2015) claim that writing is a primary skill for students to be successful at university. The most important part of EAP program is often considered Academic Writing skill. It is needed to express ideas clearly in writing simple summaries to dissertations. So, in this section students will be taught how to write paragraphs, summaries for academic articles, different proposals or academic reflections. Therefore, in this module there are several writing assignment to evaluate your academic language skill on written genres of English. In order to avoid plagiarism students need to learn how to cite from famous writers’ speech in writing summaries for academic articles. Adding citation gives credit to the author of the work or idea and tells that students are well-informed about academic integrity.
