18.2 Maestro Help
For information on performing a particular operation in Maestro, look for answers first in the
help. The help system includes descriptions of all the Maestro panels and how to use them, and
other information on performing various tasks. In addition, it has active links to other sources
of information, such as the PDF manuals and the Schrödinger web site.
The Maestro help is presented in the
Help
panel. You can open the help panel in the following
ways:
• Click the
Help
button in the lower right corner of a panel or dialog box, or press
F1
. The
button may have text or an icon.
A topic is displayed that gives information about the panel, dialog box, or current tab in
the panel.
• Choose
Help
from the
Help
menu, or press
CTRL+H (H)
in the Workspace. A topic is
displayed that gives information about getting help.
• Choose
Help
from a shortcut menu in the Workspace, to open a relevant help topic.
Most topics contains a list of contents at the top that you can click to go to the relevant section,
and a list of related topics at the end that you can click to select a new topic.

By default, the search looks for all the words you enter (implicitly inserting “and” between the
words). The search allows you to construct complex search expressions:
• Use ‘and’, ‘or’, and ‘not’ to construct conditional expressions. For example, ‘ligand prep-
aration not protein’ finds topics that contain ‘ligand’ and ‘preparation’ but not ‘protein’.
• Use parentheses to group expressions, e.g. ‘(ligand not protein) preparation’ first looks
for topics that contain ‘ligand’ but not ‘protein’, and then looks in the results of that
search for topics that contain ‘preparation’.
• Use double quotes to search for an exact phrase, e.g. “protein preparation”.
To find words in a single topic, click the
Find on page
button.
You can then enter the words in the search text box and press
ENTER
or click the
Search
button. Click the arrow buttons to go to the next or the previous hit in the page.
18.3 Context-Sensitive Help
Maestro has two other help features, which are described below.
Auto-Help
The Auto-Help text area is located at the foot of the main window. The Auto-Help facility
provides automatic context-sensitive help, usually providing information about the task to be
completed. For example, when you open the
Atom Labels
panel, Auto-Help prompts you to
pick an atom to label. Auto-Help is not available for all operations.
Tooltips
Tool tips (Balloon Help) consist of a floating text box containing context-sensitive help that
appears when the pointer rests on an object. The box disappears when you move the pointer.
You can temporarily disable tool tips by deselecting
Show tooltips
in the
Appearance
tab of the
Preferences
panel. Tool tips are available for many but not all interface components.

18.4 Manuals
Manuals are available in PDF format on the program DVD or the download, and are installed
into the docs folder (directory) of your software installation. Manuals can be opened via the
HTML documentation index Documentation_Index.html (
Help
→
Documentation Index
),
or via a PDF index, Manuals_Index.pdf, which you can open in your PDF viewer. On
Windows you can open the documentation index from the
Start
menu.
Manuals (and the PDF index) contain links to other manuals. As not all PDF viewers treat
cross-document links correctly, we recommend the following viewers:
• Linux: okular or evince
• Mac: Adobe Reader
• Windows: Adobe Reader.
If you have Adobe Reader installed, in a version no earlier than 6.0, you can use the search
index provided with the documentation to search the entire manual set. You do not need to load
this index to search the documentation with Adobe Reader, but it makes the search much
quicker. Choose
Help
→
Search Manuals
or open Manuals_Search.pdx in Adobe Reader,
and then do the search. This file is stored in the docs folder. The problems with Adobe Reader
on Linux not following links does not affect the links to documents in the search results.
If you use more than one search index in Adobe Reader, you can select the Schrödinger index
by following the instructions below.
1. Click
Search
.
2. Click
Advanced Search Options
at the bottom of the panel.
3. Under
Look In
, choose
Select Index
.
4. Navigate to and select the file schrodinger.pdx, which is in $SCHRODINGER/docs.
5. Ensure that this is the only index selected for searching.
If a document does not open when you click the link to it, the problem could be one of those
listed below.
1. The document is not installed.
The installed documents are located in $SCHRODINGER/docs/product, where product is
maestro
, for example. By default, all the documentation is installed. See the
Installation
Guide
for installation information.
2. The document was copied by the application and the relative links between PDF files are
not preserved.
