Cyril and Method


  • Both came from Soluň and before than they went invite priest Rostislav to Great Moravian (863), they functioned some time as missionary at Chazar in Krym. From there they brought remains Saint pope Klement I. At first to Konstantinopole, then they took them to Moravian and they carried them as far as Rome (867). They translated sacral books and Writing holy to the Slovanian. They looked after about upbringing their pupils, so that their work had continuators. Their holiday from 14 th century celebrated at Slovanic nations on 9 th March, in 1863 was shift on 5 th July and in 1880 was enlarge for all Church. The pope John Paul II. declared them under patrons of the Europe on 31 st December in 1980.



  • Cyril was born in 827 as the youngest of 7 children. His first name was Konstantin. He was to brought up in Konstantinopol and there he instructed and he functioned in diplomatic services at emperor´s yard. In Moravian he functioned about 5 years. In Rome he came into monastery and he received name Cyril. He died on 14 th February in 869 and he buried in basilica Saint Klement.



  • Metoděj is also regular name. Originally he named maybe Michal. At first he functioned in state administrative service with Slovanians in settled part of byzantine empire. About 840 he gave precedence nunhood. He accopmanied his younger brother to Great Moravian and to Rome. There pope Hadrián II. consecrate him onto priest(868) and he established him archbishop for territory Great Moravian and Panonie (869). He continued in work, which he initiated with his brother and he christened of czech prince Bořivoj. He died on 6 th May in 865.

  • 14 th February (27 th February in compliance with civil calendar) is independent festival Saint Cyril (once Konstantin), memory death (+869)

  • 6 th April (19 th April in compliance with civil calendar is independent festival Saint Method, memory death (+865)

  • 11 th May (according to orthodox church calendarium, 24 th May in compliance with contemporary civil calendar) – arrival holy soluň ´s brothers from Byzance to Great Moravian in 863.
