Yeni-gerçekçi bir sinemac› olarak tan›nan Pietro
Germi, 1960’larda uluslararas› alanda da seks
komedileri ad› alt›nda büyük ilgi gören sivri
sosyal komedilerle yeni bir döneme girdi. 1962’de
‹talyan Usulü Boflanma ile En ‹yi Senaryo dal›nda Oscar
kazand›, hemen ard›ndan gelen ç›lg›n komedisi
Aldat›lm›fl ve Terkedilmifl, k›zg›n baba rolündeki Saro
Urzi’ye 1964 y›l›nda Cannes’da En ‹yi Erkek Oyuncu
ödülünü kazand›rd›. Bunu, 1966’da yine Cannes’da Alt›n
Palmiye’yi paylaflan Baylar ve Bayanlar izledi. Aldat›lm›fl
ve Terkedilmifl, maço Sicilya’n›n evlenme hakk›ndaki
saplant›l› geleneklerini ti’ye alan zalim ve ac›mas›z bir
inceleme olman›n yan› s›ra, keskin bir mizah anlay›fl›yla
cinsellik söz konusu oldu¤unda baflvurulan ikiyüzlülü¤ü
alaya alan toplumsal bir elefltiri. Sicilya’da, küçük bir
kasabada, genç Peppino, drahomas› için niflanland›¤›
tombul Matilde’nin k›z kardefli güzel Agnese’yi bafltan
ç›kararak hamile b›rak›r. K›z›n›n halinden çok kendi
itibar›n› düflünen k›zg›n baba Vincenzo, genç adam›n
evini basarak onu kirletilmifl k›z›yla evlenmeye zorlar.
Peppino ödle¤in teki ç›kar ve böyle kirletilmifl bir k›zla
asla evlenemeyece¤ini söyler. Bundan sonra film,
ç›lg›n bir tempo kazan›r ve tehditler, cinayet teflebbüsleri,
aldatmalar, mahkemeler, sahte adam kaç›rmalar ve kalp
krizleriyle sürer. 
Known as a neoreal›st f›lmmaker, P›etro Germ›
successfully re›nvented h›mself ›n the 1960s as a
maker of st›ng›ng soc›al comed›es, wh›ch were
popular ›nternat›onally as sex farces.
Divorce –
Italian Style won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay
in 1962, and the ferociously funny Seduced and
Abandoned came as a follow up to earn Saro Urzi the
Best Actor award at Cannes in 1964 with his role as the
frenzied father. He continued this chain of comedies
with The Birds, the Bees and the Italians sharing the
Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1966. Among the most vivid
of Italian style comedies, Seduced and Abandoned is a
wicked and grotesque examination of the obsessive
marriage rites of macho Sicily, and also a social satire
with sexual hypocrisy as the subject. In a small Sicilian
town, young Peppino is engaged to the plump Matilde
for her dowry, but ends up seducing her sister Agnese
who gets pregnant. Her parents eventually learn the
facts, and her father, Vincenzo, more concerned with
his own honor raids Peppino’s house to force him to
marry his dishonored daughter. But Peppino is a
coward, and with an escape in his mind, he states he
would not marry a debased woman. With a frenetic
tempo, the film then carries on with threats, murder
attempts, deception, lawsuits, false kidnaps and false
heart attacks, and convents.

için icat etti¤i çok komik tik ve yüz ifadeleri bile, filmin
hiç eskimemesi için yeterli sebeptir. Bu performans ona,
kariyerinde En ‹yi Erkek Oyuncu dal›ndaki üç Oscar
adayl›¤›n›n ilkini getirmiflti. Germi, filmi için tam da
do¤ru oyuncular› seçmiflti: Çok keyifli bir küçük kasaba
Kazanova’s› parodisi sunan Mastroianni; istenmeyen efl

Comb›n›ng an act›ng career w›th h›s f›lm
d›rect›ng, P›etro Germ› gradually turned away
from ser›ous themes and embraced comedy, albe›t
as a soc›al sat›r›st.
Among the earliest, and probably
the most popular worldwide, was Divorce – Italian
Style, a brutally funny black comedy playing on moralist
double standards. The hilarious tics and expressions
that he invented for Baron Fefè, who plots to kill his
wife in an “honor killing”, are enough to forever protect
the film from aging. This performance brought him the
first of his three Oscar nominations for Best Actor.
The director had just the right choice of actors in the
marvelous Mastroianni, who offers a delightful parody
of a small-town Casanova; the hilarious Rocca as the
unwanted wife; and Sandrelli, who needs only to
display her natural physical attractions in contrast to
those of her formidable rival. A tremendous box-office
hit in Italy and abroad, Divorce – Italian Style did much
to solidify appreciation for Mastroianni’s acting talents,
and is still the best known of all Germi films, a black
humor masterpiece. “Germi didn’t want me for this
film. I, instead, insisted and had some pictures taken,
with straight and then curly hair, like a nut. Then I sent
them to him. At last, he was finally convinced.”
