3.4 Main Topics in Wax Studies
Over
the last few decades, the exploration and
production of hydrocarbons
has moved offshore and (in parallel) technological developments have made it
possible to develop both marginal and deepwater reservoirs. Production from
most of these reservoirs is only possible through long tiebacks and extended-
reach flowlines.
The long tiebacks result in high fluid residence
times at low seabed
temperature. Under these low temperature conditions, wax deposition can be
a serious problem for efficient and economical oil production.
As a result, over the last decades, the industry and research institutions have
directed continuous and intensive efforts into wax studies – these efforts can
be broadly categorised as follows:
•
Analysis of wax constituents.
•
Experimental measurement of wax formation.
•
Modelling of wax phase equilibrium.
•
Experimental measurement and modelling of wax deposition.
•
Design and testing of wax control strategies.
