Academic listening is a means of achieving the main goal, fluently recognizing and understanding English speech. This means mastering the skills of hearing adjustment, recognition of foreign speech, recognition of lexical and grammatical material, understanding, assessment of what is heard, and written or oral repetition.For this language activity, special educational materials and personalized audiobooks are used, which are intended for different levels of knowledge of the English language. In self-research, the text can be listened to many times. In exams, as a rule, the number of auditions is limited to two times.³⁶
Communicative listening is the main goal of learning, a free understanding of the speech of any foreign speaker with one repetition.
What does hearing give?
There are a number of useful skills to help you master:
Tone and intonation of speech. Many people who learn English without speaking to native speakers pass on the intonation of their native language to foreign speech. To fully master another language, you need to know not only the grammatical system, general pronunciation rules and vocabulary. Mastering the emotional side of communication is also very important.
Pronunciation. Despite the fact that in almost any English Dictionary all lexical units are accompanied by transcription, it is impossible to convey all the nuances using graphic repetition of vocal features. Many moments can be understood and felt only in practice, by listening and repeating.
Ambiguity. English words have a lot of meanings and applications. Listening is a way to help you understand the use of words through specific examples.
Language approximation. When communicating in their native language, everyone can fill in the missing information if they have not heard something. It is this skill that must be mastered by learning a foreign language. Another aspect is the ability to predict the meaning of a new lexical unit from context, as well as by understanding the structure of the language.
