2.3. Features and types of listening.
Definition and essence of listening
Listening is the process of listening to foreign speech. This is one of the most difficult skills, since this language activity involves several factors:
Unlike reading, listening requires real-time understanding. It is impossible to stop and understand. Especially if this is an exam, the time here is very limited.
You cannot control the content as you do when speaking or writing your text. It is impossible to bypass unfamiliar lexical units and grammatical constructions, replacing them with more acquaintances.
In the speaker's speech, there may be certain features that make it difficult to understand the text: specific accents, diction, intonation.
English contains a large number of dialects. Often representatives from different parts of the United Kingdom, the United States or Australia have difficulty understanding each other.
The average English or American speech speed is very fast.
Types of hearing
There are several types of these speech activities:
Listening in detail is listening with a complete understanding of the content of the text, including the smallest details. This is one of the most difficult types, since all the details can be perceived only with a good knowledge of the language.
Listening to meaning-listening to understand the main points and general meaning. This look is much easier because you don't have to try to capture every detail. In addition, this type of activity helps to develop one useful quality - language prediction, that is, the ability to fill gaps from the context.
Listening to specific information is listening to a passage to find specific information. The rest of the text can be skipped.35
Inferential listening is guessing based on the data listened to. This type of speech activity is very psychological in nature, since in this case the main meaning is not to understand information, but to cover the emotional mood and state of the interlocutor. This type can be included in non-verbal communication. When preparing for exams, such a type of activity is not very useful, but in real life, the ability to acquire intonation shades and mood of another person significantly facilitates the communication process.
