There is bad news for banana lovers. The most common banana in the world is in danger
of becom ing extinct. It is called the Cavendish banana and people eat it all over the world.
A fungus, a kind of living organism, called Tropical Race 4 (TP4) is killing millions o f banana
plants. The fungus blocks small tubes that absorb water inside the plant. This means after
disease the plant cannot get the liquid it needs and so it dies. Scientists first discovered T P 4 in
Malaysia. It quickly spread to other parts of South-East Asia and from there to Australia and
Africa. T P 4 is spread in dirt that is carried by the wind, water, cars and even people’s boots.
A tiny amount o f TP4 can spread across large areas very quickly. Some scientists believe TP4
could kill the banana industry.

Have you ever wondered why everyone’s nose is a different shape? Researchers have come up
with a possible explanation for this. A study says the Earth’s climate could have something to
do with the shape of our nose. The study found that people who have wider noses usually live
in warmer, wetter areas. People with narrower noses are more commonly found in colder and
drier climates. The nose plays an important function in making the air reach our lungs in a
warm condition. The width of the nostrils and length of the nose help to make sure this happens.
Researchers said the nose is a little like a temperature controller.

Scientists may have found one answer to the problem of water shortages. It is a new material
that collects water from the air. They got their idea from a small beetle that lives in the desert
in Africa. The deserts in Namibia are very dry, but the desert beetle is an expert at surviving
in hot and dry conditions. Its skin is covered with small holes that collect tiny water drops from
the air. The water is enough to keep the beetle alive. Scientists studied the shape and material
of the beetle’s skin. They want to use what they found out about the beetle to make their own
materials that can collect water from the air. This will help people who live in very dry areas.
The scientists believe this new technology could help in many areas of our life.
