Scientists tell us that some birds are clever. The birds use tools to get food. In one study,
scientists observed crows. The scientists wanted to see if the crows could solve a simple problem.
The problem was how to get some food out of a container. Inside the container, the food floated
on the surface of some water. But the birds couldn’t put their heads inside the container to get
the food. The container was too narrow. The scientists put some different heavy objects near the
container. The birds took the objects and put them into the water. As a result, the level of the
water rose inside the container and the birds took the food. In Japan, crows have found a clever
way to open nuts. The birds take the nuts from a tree. Then they put
the nuts on the road, near
traffic lights. When the lights turn green, the cars go over the nuts, breaking them. When the
lights turn red, the traffic stops. The crows can go down and pick up the broken nuts.

Cutting an onion is not a very pleasant experience. It may hurt your eyes and make you cry.
When
you cut an onion, you break the onion’s parts. Chemicals inside the onion are released.
These chemicals react with the water in your eyes. There is a chemical reaction which creates
sulphuric acid. Your eyes produce tears, which wash away the acid. A good idea to prevent from
this problem is to use a sharp knife. Sharp knives do less damage to the onion’s parts. So fewer
chemicals are released. This means that there is less pain in your eyes. It isn’t a good idea to
crush an onion because this causes more damage to the parts. More damage means more pain
in your eyes. The pain in your eyes doesn’t last long. A cold onion releases fewer chemicals. So
before you cut an onion, put it in the freezer for a few minutes. Another idea is to put the onion
in water when you cut it. So the chemicals won’t go into the air and so they won’t hurt your eyes.
141. According to the passage, how can one
prevent from the problem while cutting
onions?
A) by throwing them away
B) by crushing them hard
C) by using sharp knives
D) by cutting them slowly

A) There will be more pain in your eyes.
B) There will be less pain in your eyes.

143. According to the passage, what is another
way of cutting onions with less pain in
your eyes?
A) Cut onions after crushing them
completely.
B) Cut onions after cutting other vegetables.
C) Cut onions after putting them in the
freezer.
D) Cut onions in open places like gardens.
144. All of the following statements are TRUE,
EXCEPT ...
A) If an onion has been in the freezer, it
releases fewer chemicals.
B) When you cut onions, the pain in your
eyes lasts for a long time.
C) If you use
a very sharp knife while
cutting, you are less likely to cry.

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to do something am azin g that no one else could
do? That’s what it must have been like for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was born in 1756 in
Salzburg, Austria. Mozart showed his musical genius early. Encouraged by his father, Mozart
began to play the harpsichord at the age of three! At age four he could compose piano music and
play the violin. He began composing minuets at age five. He wrote symphonies at age nine.
Mozart could compose a long piece of music in his head. He imagined what he wanted it
to sound like and then played it perfectly. He often did this without writing it down. When
he wrote it down, it was flawless. When Mozart was 12, he and his father visited St. Peter’s
Cathedral in Rome. There they heard a famous piece of music called a Miserere. This music was
beautiful. The church did not allow it to be copied or performed elsewhere. But Mozart loved
the piece. He wrote it down from memory so he could play it himself.
During his life, Mozart produced more than 600 musical works. He is remembered as one of
the most brilliant composers who ever lived.
