French Biblical and Archaeological School of Jerusalem

(Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française)
L'Ecole Biblique et Archéologique Française was founded as L'Ecole Pratique d'Etudes Bibliques on November 15, 1890 by Father Marie-Joseph Lagrange, O.P. (1855-1938) on the site acquired by his confrere, Father Matthieu Lecomte, where once stood the basilica built shortly after 431 by Empress Eudocia to commemorate the martyrdom of Saint Stephen. It was the first graduate school for biblical and archaeological studies in the Holy Land.
Conducted by the Dominicans, L'Ecole Biblique was recognized by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres of Paris in 1920, thereby allowing it to complete its name Ecole Biblique with the words et Archéologique Française. In 1983, the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome granted l'Ecole Biblique the right to confer the degree of Doctor of Biblical Sciences.

Pontifical Biblical Institute (PBI)
When the Pontifical Biblical Institute was founded in Rome in 1909, a branch in the Holy Land was already being considered. Father Alexis Mallon, S.J. came to Jerusalem in 1913 to set up such a branch but was prevented from doing so because of the War of 1914-18. He returned in 1919. The cornerstone of the building was laid in October 1925 and the inauguration took place in July 1927.
From 1927 to 1938, a few students from the Biblicum in Rome came to Jerusalem each year during the last semester of their studies. Beginning in 1952, the Jerusalem branch opened its doors to other biblical students. Courses in the biblical languages were organized from 1969 to 1972 for students preparing to attend the Biblicum in Rome.
Since 1975, a program of seven months is offered by Hebrew University of Jerusalem to students of the Biblicum who have completed in Rome the introductory course in biblical Greek and Hebrew. This program aims at deepening their knowledge of Hebrew and of the history, geography and archaeology of the land of the Bible. Since 1986, the Ecole Biblique of Jerusalem receives for one semester other students from the Biblicum in Rome who are halfway through their studies. In addition to the study of biblical Aramaic, this program includes courses in exegesis. Finally, since 2000, the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum offers each year in September a course in biblical archaeology to a significant number of students from the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF)

Facultas Scientiarum Biblicarum et Archaeologiae

Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology
The Studium Biblicum Franciscanum was established in 1924 by Father F. Diotallevi, Custos of the Holy Land, as the Order's center for biblical studies in Jerusalem. The Convent of the Flagellation in Jerusalem was chosen as the Studium's base of operation and was adapted to its new purpose. A specialized library was built up, and a Palestinian archaeological museum was created. In 1927, by decision of the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), the SBF became an integral part of the study program of the Antonianum College in Rome for courses in Holy Scripture. In 1933, the first archaeological campaign on Mount Nebo (Jordan) was conducted.
On June 14, 1960, the Studium was recognized as the biblical department of the Pontificium Athenaeum Antonianum, and on March 15, 1982, the Congregation for Catholic Education erected it as the parallel branch of the Faculty of Theology of the same Athenaeum. On September 4, 2001, the same Congregation elevated it to the rank of Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology. Since January 11, 2005, Pontificium Athenaeum Antonianum has the title of Pontifical University "Antonianum."
In addition to its degree programs leading to both the licentiate (S.S.L.) and the doctorate (S.S.D.), the Studium offers courses leading to specialized diplomas in Oriental Biblical Studies and Archaeology and in Biblical Formation. It also offers, on a yearly basis, a week of theological biblical updating and, periodically, a program of continuing education for those who serve as spiritual guides to pilgrims.
Associated with the SBF is the Custody of the Holy Land's School of Theology, the Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum (STJ) (see the following section).

Bat Kol Institute
Associated with the Sisters of Sion, Bat Kol is a Catholic association of Christian women and men who are committed to study the Word of God within its Jewish context and to incorporate these studies into their Christian self-understanding. The inspiration for its founding was Nostra Aetate (#4) which states: "Since Christians and Jews have such a common spiritual heritage, this sacred Council wishes to encourage and further mutual understanding and appreciation. This can be obtained, especially, by way of biblical and theological inquiry and through friendly discussions." Bat Kol was founded as an institute where Christians can engage in biblical studies and explore their own historical relationship with the Jewish tradition as a whole.
Each year Bat Kol Institute sponsors intensive month-long graduate-level courses in Jerusalem, accepted by the Gregorian University and several international universities. In addition, Bat Kol Institute staff supervises several international Bat Kol extension programs.

C. Seminaries

Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Jerusalem
Opened in Jerusalem in December 1852 by Patriarch Valerga, the seminary was transferred to Beit Jala on September 7, 1857. Because of circumstances, it returned several times to Jerusalem, though its principal base of operations has been Beit Jala where it was permanently established on July 7, 1936.
Directed at first by priests of the Patriarchate, it was entrusted to the Benedictines of Dormition Abbey in October 1921 and to the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Betharram in October 1932. Since July 1980, it is once again under the direction of the priests of the Patriarchate. The Sisters of Saint Charles Borromeo serviced the seminary from 1921 to 1929 but have since been replaced by the Sisters of Saint Dorothy of Vicenza.
The curriculum comprises an introductory year of spirituality, a year to master the French language, and two years of philosophy, followed by four years of theology, plus a year of pastoral experience in the parishes before the diaconate. The curriculum in theology was affiliated with the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome on May 3, 1967. This affiliation enables the students to receive, at the end of the program, the degree of Bachelor of Theology.
The academic and formation programs are based on the Ratio Fundamentalis, the Apostolic Exhortation Pastores Dabo Vobis, the Ordo of the Pontifical Lateran University, and the Ratio Studiorum of the seminary which was updated in 1990 and published in the General Academic Calendar. Courses are taught in Arabic, French, and occasionally English.
Founded mainly to train local clergy, the seminary has traditionally been and remains open to students from other institutions and countries who wish to prepare themselves, on site, for the service of the Church in the Holy Land. Since its opening in 1852 until the end of the 2007-08 academic year, 260 former seminarians have been ordained priests, 12 of them have become bishops, three of them patriarchs.

Studium Theologicum Jerosolymitanum (STJ)
In 1866 the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land founded at the Convent of Saint Savior in Jerusalem a School of Theology called the Studium Theologicum with the goal of forming future priests. Since that time, hundreds of students from many countries have attended the Studium, many of whom have distinguished themselves in the fields of moral theology, biblical studies, history, and archaeology.
On March 12, 1971, the Congregation for Catholic Education approved the affiliation of the Studium to the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University "Antonianum" in Rome with the right to confer the Bachelor Degree in Sacred Theology. Afterwards, on March 15, 1982, the Studium became the first cycle of the parallel branch of the Faculty of Theology in Jerusalem, known as the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. By 1987-88, courses in Philosophy began to be offered at the Franciscan Convent in Bethlehem. Then on September 4, 2001, the Studium Theologicum continued its usual academic system of organization as the first cycle of the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology, leading up to the Bachelor Degree in Sacred Theology. Its academic program is based on that of the Pontifical University "Antonianum" in Rome with a few addtional subjects relating to the specific context of the Holy Land.
The Studium is under the responsibility of the Custos of the Holy Land and welcomes non-Franciscan students.

Studium Theologicum Salesianum

"Saints Peter and Paul" - Ratisbonne
Founded in Bethlehem in 1929, the Studium Theologicum Salesianum in the Holy Land was transferred to Tantur in 1949, then to Cremisan, near Beit Jala, in 1957. Since 1973, it has been affiliated with the Theological Faculty of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. In September 2004, the students and the academic staff moved to the former Ratisbonne Monastery in Jerusalem, under the patronage of Saints Peter and Paul.
The primary purpose of the Centre is the intellectual and spiritual formation of young Salesian students preparing for the priesthood. Other religious or secular students presented by their respective ordinaries are also welcome.
Given its privileged location in the Holy Land, the Study Centre aims especially at highlighting a biblical formation by offering appropriate means to achieve this end. In addition, thanks to the ethnic and cultural richness of the Holy Land, it offers the students the possibility of achieving a desirable and necessary ecumenical and inter-religious formation.
The regular professors and administrative staff belong to the same Salesian community. However, a number of guest professors from the Theological Faculty of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome and from nearby theological centres also share in the teaching. The Studium Theologicum Salesianum is provided with an adequate library, which is constantly updated.
The official language used in the Study Centre is English.
