A. LATIN CHURCH
Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

(Latin Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem)
The Church of Jerusalem was born on the day of Pentecost. It was governed at first by the College of Apostles under the leadership of St. Peter. St. James was the first bishop of Jerusalem. A long line of bishops has followed until this day. The Church of Jerusalem was recognized as a patriarchate by the Council of Chalcedon in 451.
Over the centuries, the various Christian communities in Jerusalem shared a common history and, by and large, lived in harmony among themselves until 451 when, following the Council of Chalcedon, the Orthodox (Greek) separated themselves from the Orthodox Oriental Churches (Coptic, Armenian and Syrian). A second major division came in 1054 when the Churches of the East and those of the West separated from each other. Today, Jerusalem has thirteen Churches with constituted dioceses, six Catholic (Latins, Greek Catholics, Maronites, Syrians, Armenians, and Chaldeans), five Orthodox (Greeks, Armenians, Copts, Syrians, and Ethiopians), and two Protestant (Anglicans and Lutherans).
When the Crusaders arrived in 1099, the Greek Patriarch Simon fled to Cyprus, leaving the See of Jerusalem vacant. Consequently, the Crusaders installed one of their own, Arnulf, as the first Latin Patriarch. The Latin Patriarchs succeeded themselves in Jerusalem from 1099 to 1187, at which time the city fell to Saladin, the Latin Patriarch moved to Acre, and the Greek Orthodox Patriarch returned to Jerusalem.
In 1218, the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) opened its first monastery in St. John of Acre, thus becoming the oldest Roman Catholic institution in the Holy Land. When Acre fell in 1291, the Latin Patriarchs moved to Cyprus, then, in 1374, to Rome where they succeeded themselves as Titular Patriarchs until 1847. During their absence, the constant presence of the Franciscans in the Holy Land was a determining factor in the preservation, formation and growth of the local Catholic Church.
On July 23, 1847, the Patriarchal See of Jerusalem was restored as a residential see by the Apostolic Letter of Pius IX, Nulla Celebrior. The first to occupy the post, Patriarch Giuseppe Valerga, arrived in Jerusalem on January 17, 1848 and took possession of his see by solemnly entering the Holy Sepulcher, the cathedral of the Patriarchs of Jerusalem.

HEBREW-SPEAKING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
The Hebrew-Speaking Catholic Vicariate in Israel:
The Apostolate of Saint James the Apostle was approved by Patriarch Alberto Gori on February 11, 1955, and its statutes one year later, to answer the pastoral needs of Hebrew-speaking Catholics. The Vicariate has grown out of the Apostolate.

Three main challenges face the Hebrew-speaking Vicariate:

1. 
   To establish and nurture Hebrew-speaking Catholic communi-ties in the State of Israel for Catholic believers integrated into the life of Israeli Jewish society. Being Catholic in Hebrew within a predominantly Jewish milieu is a new experience in the history of the Church.
   
2. 
   To serve as a bridge between the Universal Church and the people of Israel by strengthening the relationship of Jews and Christians and sharpening the Church’s awareness of her Jewish roots and the Jewish identity of Jesus and the apostles. Our faithful are engaged fully in the life of Israeli Jewish society and in the life of the Catholic Church.
   
3. 
   To bear witness, as an integral part of the Church in the Holy Land, to values of peace and justice, pardon and reconciliation within a context of violence and war.

B. GREEK MELKITE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ANTIOCH
Greek Melkite Catholic Patriarchate of Jerusalem
The Greek Melkite Catholic Church in the Holy Land shares a common history with the Greek Orthodox Church. This common history lasted until 1724 when the hierarchy was split in two in the three Melkite Patriarchates of Antioch, Alexandria, and Jerusalem. Since that date, there have been parallel lines of Orthodox and Catholic Patriarchs, which explains why the Melkite Church is in full communion with the Church of Rome and, at the same time, deeply rooted in the Eastern tradition.
In 1772, the Greek Melkite Catholics of Jerusalem asked Patriarch Theodosius V Dahan of Antioch to come under his jurisdiction. Pope Clement XIV responded favorably to their request. Since 1938, the Greek Melkite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch carries the personal title of Alexandria and Jerusalem.

Greek Melkite Catholic Archeparchy of Akko
Ptolemais-Acre, which had been visited by Saint Paul, quickly formed a Christian community that became a suffragant diocese of Tyr until the end of the Crusades, after which it remained without a resident bishop.
In 1752, the see was restored as a Melkite diocese by Patriarch Cyril VI Tanas and attached once again to Tyr, which had become independent from Jerusalem. However, the Melkite bishops of Acre began to reside there only in 1804.
Before 1932, the jurisdiction of Acre included Transjordan. The see became an archeparchy (archdiocese) on November 18, 1964 and includes all of Galilee.

Greek Melkite Catholic Archeparchy of Petra and Philadelphia
The Archeparchy was founded in 1932 by the Holy Synod of the Greek Melkite Catholic Church with the approval of the Holy See. Until this date, the northern section of Transjordan came under the jurisdiction of the Archeparchy of Acre, while the southern section came under that of the Vicariate of Jerusalem. The new see of Petra-Philadelphia became a Greek Melkite Catholic archeparchy with jurisdiction over Jordan and residence in Amman.
