Maronite Patriarchal Exarchate of Jerusalem and Jordan

and the Palestinian Territory
Founded in April 1895 by the future Patriarch Elias Houayyek, the Exarchate presently depends on the Maronite Patriarch H.B. Pierre Nasrallah Sfeir in Bkerkeh, Lebanon. Since 1945, it has jurisdiction over the Maronites in Jordan. The residence in Jerusalem was partially restored in 1976 by Bishop A. Harfouche, part of it serving as a center for pilgrims (Saint Maron Guesthouse), and part of it, with a multi-purpose hall for young people and parishioners, serving the needs of the Patriarchal Vicariate. The work of restoration was completed in the year 2001. That same year, the premises were expanded by the purchase of an adjacent house and the construction of a residence for the Exarch.

D. ARMENIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF CILICIA
Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Jerusalem
In 1856, Rev. Serope Tavitian came to Jerusalem, probably sent by H.B. Patriarch Grégoire Pierre III Der Asdouaza Dourian. At the time, the area on Via Dolorosa where the Third Station is now located was a vacant lot except for the presence of an old Turkish public bath. Because tradition held that a church had once stood on that site, he became interested in it. Thanks to the generosity of a distinguished Armenian Catholic, Andon Bey Missirli, he was able to purchase the land. He became the first Patriarchal Vicar. The present chapel at the Third Station served as his oratory. It was blessed by the Latin Patriarch in 1897.
In 1881, the Vicar at the time, Father Joachim Toumaian who had been appointed in 1877, discovered the mosaic pavement depicting in its center a pair of sandals, thought to represent the spot where Jesus met his Mother (Fourth Station). A small chapel was erected on El Wad Street to commemorate this event.
The construction of the church marking the Third and Fourth Stations began at the same time as that of the Vicariate. The latter was finished in 1885 and the church in 1905. Enlargements followed in 1950 and 1964.

E. SYRIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF ANTIOCH
Syrian Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Jerusalem
In conformity with a decision made by the early Church, Jerusalem kept its status within the Syrian Church of Antioch as one of the vicariates of the Patriarchal See of Antioch. The Syrian Church, which united to Rome in 1782, established the Vicariate of Jerusalem in 1890. By a firman dated May 6, 1845, Ottoman Sultan Abdel Majid recognized the civil rights of the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch in Jerusalem and in the Holy Land and exempted it from all taxes and customs.
The residence of the Exarchate shared the vicissitudes of the wars and revolutions that took place between 1900 and 1973. It was successively transferred in 1948 from Damascus Gate in Jerusalem to Bethlehem and in 1965 from Bethlehem back to Jerusalem, to the present House of Abraham (Maison d'Abraham) at Ras El Amud-Silwan. In 1973, it purchased a property and settled definitively at 6 Chaldean Street. In 1986 the church of Saint Thomas was built along with other facilities that include the Saint Thomas Center for Pilgrims and a Youth Center.

IV. Custody of the Holy Land (1217)

(Custodia Terræ Sanctæ)
In 1217, the Franciscans created the Province of the Holy Land. In 1263, this province was divided into three territories, each one called a "Custody," one of them being known as the Custody of the Holy Land or of Syria, depending on where its communities were located. In 1291, following the fall of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Friars moved to Cyprus.
In 1336, supported in their request to the Sultan of Egypt by the Sovereigns of Naples, the Franciscans were able to re-establish themselves permanently in the Holy Land after having obtained all the required legal rights to the holy places and acquired other properties and residences. These acquisitions were officially recognized by Pope Clement VI on November 21, 1342. From then on, the central headquarters of the Custody of the Holy Land were located next to the Cenacle on Mount Sion. However, the Friars were expelled from the site in 1551. In 1560, they acquired the present convent of Saint Savior in Jerusalem and transferred their central headquarters to the new location.
The principal responsibility of the Custody of the Holy Land has been, and remains, the protection of the holy places with which it has been entrusted since its very beginnings by the Holy See. It diligently maintains the shrines, basilicas and churches, and provides for the needs of its convents. It takes to heart the welcoming and care of pilgrims. The Casa Novas of Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Mount Tabor and Tiberias offer these pilgrims hospitality. Religious of various linguistic backgrounds are at their disposal to guide and assist them spiritually. The Custody carries out its various activities in all of the countries of the Near East: Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus, Egypt and Rhodes.
The Custody of the Holy Land comprises Franciscans of 32 nationalities from 59 religious provinces. It is governed from Jerusalem by the Custos, who is assisted by a council of 7 members.
