Final Theoretical Phonetics

Card-5

  1. Significance of Phonetics.

Theoretical significance of phonetics is connected with the further development of the problem of the synchronic study and description of the phonetic system of a national language, the comparative analysis and description of different languages, the study of the correspondences between them, the diachronic description of successive changes in the phonetic system of a language or different languages.Practical significance of phonetics is connected with teaching foreign languages. Practical phonetics is applied in methods of speech correction, teaching deaf-mutes, film dubbing, transliteration, radio and television.
honetics is the study of the production of speech sounds by the speaker and how they are perceived by the listener. It involves the production, transmission, and reception of the sound. Oftentimes, the term phonology is used interchangeably; however, phonology is the branch of linguistics where phonetics is a part of it.The use of phonetics in English learning can be considered a recent trend. Both for young learners and ESL learners phonetics is a must-have in the curriculum. Learning phonetics help in recognizing both familiar and unfamiliar sounds, improves pronunciation skills, and develops autonomy in words and sound recognition. Phonetics not only guides the learner in decoding the sound, it also helps them to know how a word must be spelt out while writing. When you spell a word with a phoneme, it is called Grapheme. Graphemes are the symbols that are used to identify a single phoneme – a letter or group of letters that represent the sound.
2.Spoken and written language.Speaking and writing are different in both origin and practice.Written – planned, organized, transactional. Spoken – unplanned, less structured, interactive. The written form of language is usually a generally accepted standard and is the same throughout the country. But spoken language may different from place to place. Such distinct forms of language are called dialects! Every national variety of language falls into territorial or regional dialects. Dialects are distinguished from each other by differences in pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. What are spoken and written language? Spoken English is face to face and is more in narrative form, event-based, action-based and story-based. Written English can be expository based, idea-based, explaining ideas and describing future and past. Written language is a way of recording language using any of various instruments and material, such as pen and paper, chisel and stone, or computers. The language itself is either spoken or signed, so written language develops as a way of representing what has been said.
