study stratigraphy of cultured layer of the town under leadership of eminent
archaeologist Fazil Osmanov and with my participation.
Large-scale archaeological investigations were launched there in initiative
and support of "MIRAS" Social Organization in Support of Studying of Cultural
Heritage since March of this year. The investigations were mainly completed
previously in 600 sq/ms field which we provisionally call III field. The excavations
are presently ongoing in IV excavation field. Primary results of implemented
archaeological investigations were partially reflected in a book-album to be
introduced to you today. Therefore I will confine myself to draw your attention to
only some moments on the results of the excavations. They are as follows:
Agsu town is a one-stratum monument. Thickness of a cultured layer, i.e.
living fold is 1, 4-1, 7 meter. 3 construction layers were fixed in separate places
over each other. Basis of all constructions are made of non-hewed river stone. Top
part of buildings' basis was principally built from hewed river stones.
Road and street rests cobbling with stone accurately were displayed in
several sites of III excavation field, while a small square found only in one place.
The remnants of house-rooms were discovered in three places and rests of
subsidiaries were found in some sites. Subsidiaries mainly include constructions of
a stokehole, clay oven and workshop type. I would like to note particularly
construction of a workshop type. Pay attention to that, the adjoining workshops
where dyer, smith, brazier, and masters specialized on bone products work, were
found in 6, 7, 7a, 8, 8a and 8b squares of III excavation field. Many labour tools,
casts, ready products, manufacture outlays and relevant hearths belonged to the
mentioned vocation were discovered from the noted area.
Red and pink pigment remnants fixed inside large-scale economy pitchers
which are hacked down the ground side by side vertically up to a top part indicate
that painting is widely spread in Agsu in XVIII century. To recall, over half of the
taxes gathered from the town is stated to belong to this field in XIX century
sources.
There are 400 copper and silver coins amid the findings. Coins with "Lahij"
mint were for the first time found in the area of Azerbaijan. Moreover a plenty of
ready copper boards hacked down for the purpose of extra money mint was found.
All of these however show existence of the mint there.
As regards the findings let me say that material cultured samples made of
1000 metal, stone, bone, glass and clay having scientific significance in this or
other level were taken only from III field and registered. These findings assume
great importance from stand of more comprehensive study of present condition of
separate vocations, progress and decline inclinations in production and home and
economy way of life of population.
Fine home things produced in Iran, China, Russia, Great Britain and others
are few amongst the findings. It testifies intensive trade and cultural relations of
212
Agsu with the mentioned countries. All of these are considered excessively
significant discoveries from viewpoint of comprehensive research of city
civilization belonged to XVIII century not only in Azerbaijan, but also in whole
Caucasus.
Take into consideration that archaeological excavations have been recently
started in Agsu. The results introduced you by me are preliminary results for the
present. Agsu Archaeological Expedition resolves to proceed with investigations in
order to research deeply and comprehensively the history of the town and entirely
medieval urban problem.
As it is seen from the archaeological map of the region, Agsu area is a land
rich with historical monuments. There are numerous rare memorials awaiting the
way of the archaeologists. Each of them could be a new page in Azerbaijani
history. So, the monuments should be whenever studied.
Agsu is situated in a junction of tourism regions of Azerbaijan. It means that
Agsu is a region which also has extremely suitable tourism opportunities and
perspectives. Sta-bleness of archaeological excavations and appearance of the
newest monuments is always actual and important from this viewpoint as well.
Dear Agsu people, I want to say that you should prepare just from now for a large
steam of tourists to arrive in Agsu in next future.
Dear ladies and gentlemen!
Agsu Archaeological Expedition has been functioning for only two months.
You were partially recognized with the work we did in that term. You should agree
that, implementing this work for only two months, in weather extremely unfit for
field investigation is not so easy thing. Believe that, we have worked outdoor with
a full staff during 8 March and Novruz holidays. We elaborated archaeological
map of Agsu region parallel with excavation. Furthermore we studied a treasure
occasionally displayed in the area of Kurdamir region and having 1134 silver coins
minted by Shirvanshahs inside in I half of XV century and prepared it for
publication as an album-catalogue.
Friends, we are gathered today for thoughts and ideals of Great Leader
Haydar Aliyev. Haydar Aliyev showed permanently special attention and care to
protection and study of historical cultural heritage, our nation possessed in the
years of Haydar Aliyev leadership. He had implacable attitude towards shortages
and indifference cases in this field. I would like to recall his serious and operative
stand regarding only one case to substantiate my thought.
It was autumn in 1978. High-tension electrical line was laid up to Gabala
RLS across Mingechavir. The militaries dug a well only in one place to thatch
electric posts in the area of ancient Gabala town. As soon as Haydar Aliyev got the
news he sent a government commission there led by chairman of Presidium of
Supreme Soviet, Gurban Khalilov. Forwarding the reference of the Commission
for discussion of the sitting of Central Committee Bureau, he exposed 7-8 senior
