Museum  of  History  of  Azerbaijan,  well-known  orientalist  scientist  and  academi-
cian Naila Velikhanly and say welcome. 
All  archaeological  investigations  carried  out  in  Azerbaijan  are  conducted 
from  one  centre.  It  is  ANAS  Institute  of  Archaeology  and  Ethnography.  Mainly 
this Institute  organizes,  manages and controls  archaeological  expeditions.  Tens of 
new  monuments  are  displayed  and  explored  as  a  result  of  selfless  labour  of 
employees of ANAS Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography every year. Today 
a great staff included proficient scientists of the Institute led by director of Institute 
of Archaeology and Ethnography, our beloved Mrs. Maisa Rahimova is here today. 
Let us first welcome Mrs. Maisa particularly. 
Academician  Teymur  Bunyadov  and  associate  member  of  the  Academy, 
llyas Babayev who guided us in difficult ways of science by holding our hands one 
time and considered respected persons of archaeology and ethnography science in 
Azerbaijan, and my colleagues archaeologists-their students are here today with us. 
I would like you to welcome heartily people who are dearest to us too. 
Pretty  valuable  representatives  of  people  born  and  grown  up  in  Agsu, 
having  special  services  in  development  of  not  only  Agsu,  but  also  entirely  our 
republic by being fledged, participate in Agsu celebrations today. There are people 
supporting  us  and  becoming  closely  interested  in  movement  and  results  of 
archeological investigations in Agsu amongst them. I consider it my obligation to 
express  my  gratitude  to  those  people  led  by  head  of  regional  Executive  Power, 
Anvar Seyidaliyev, and Member of Parliament, Arastun Javadov on behalf of staff 
of Agsu Archaeological Expedition by using a chance. 
There  are  such  people  who  comprehensively  support  the  Expedition  for 
investigation  of  Agsu  history.  However,  they  are  absent  today  for  objective 
reasons. Let us welcome that people heartily and wish them luck in important and 
productive activity. 
Dear  ladies  and  gentlemen!  The  days  of  national  celebration  of  87-year 
anniversary  of  Great  Leader  HaydarAliyev  are  very  affectionate  days  for 
Azerbaijani people. HaydarAliyev established independent Azerbaijan State for us. 
He determined a development strategy of this state for a long perspective and our 
state  confidently  moves  on  under  leadership  of  distinguished  Mister  President 
llham Aliyev in this way. 
HaydarAliyev  rescued  Azerbaijan  from  breaking  and  years'  plain  plans  of 
extraneous powers intending to terminate its existence as a state. He ended internal 
confrontation  reaching  civil  war  level  in  the  country,  and  led  us  to  free  and 
democratic  development  way,  chosen  by  the  whole  civil  world.  In  one  word, 
Haydar  Aliyev  is  one  of  rare  personalities  which  XX  century  bestowed  upon 
mankind  and  whose  doings  for  Azerbaijan  and  totally  for  Turkish  world  and 
Moslem Orient can not be counted.

If  we  say  that  Haydar  Aliyev  did  many  things  for  our  history,  then  we 
display injustice. Because, he created the history himself. Our independent history, 
which all of us lives proudly and brag, is connected with his name. 
Dear friends! Azerbaijan is one of the most attractive countries of the world 
from  standpoint of  suitable geopolitical location and rich natural resources. These 
natural  and  primary  superiorities  drew  attention  of  people  since  the  very  ancient 
times.  The  first  human  dwellings  appeared  there  in  this  background  nearly  2 
million  years  ago.  It  means  that  Azerbaijani  history  has  at  least  2  million-year 
period. Be assured that not only our neighbours, but also the entire world envies us 
for our ancient history. You can not help being proud of such a history. 
We partially study 2 thousand-year period of our 2 million years history on 
the  basis  of  written  sources.  The  period  preceding  existence  of  written  sources  is 
studied referring to just archaeological investigations. 
I  can  say  with  gratefulness  that  scale  of  archaeological  investigations 
increases  day  by  day  lately  in  Azerbaijan  through  straightly  personal  control, 
attention  and  comprehensive  care  of  our  honorable  President  llham  Aliyev.  The 
work implemented in Agsu and its results should be valued as an obvious example 
of his care and attention. 
A  book-album  we  are  introducing  to  you  today  will  give  you  detailed 
information  about  history  of  Agsu  town.  I  thereon  will  touch  in  my  speech  only 
some moments on the history of the town. 
To inform you, the name of Agsu is mentioned for the first time in written 
sources  of    XVI  century.  A  new  town  (Yeni  Shamakhi)  was  laid  up  in  Agsu  275 
years  ago,  i.e.  in  May  of  1735.  Shamakhi  people  were  moved  there.  So,  Agsu 
becomes  an  official  capital  of  Shirvan  and  carries  out  this  function  till  1806  with 
intervals. 
Many  battles  took  place  at  time  with  participation  of  internal  and  outward 
forces  forsake  of  Agsu.  The  town  was  even  repeatedly  seized.  Heavy  epidemics 
occurred  there  in  1763  and  1798.  The  capital  of  the  khanate  was  many  times 
removed  to  either  Shamakhi  or  Agsu  as  a  consequence.  In  1806  Mustafa  khan 
moved  his  population  to  Fitdag  City  being  under  mountains'  bosom  to  prevent 
from their capture by hostile on the eve of Abbas Mirza' attack by ordering to ruin 
all communications of the town. 
Medieval  Agsu  Town  covers  40-hectare  field.  The  area  of  the  town  is 
surrounded  by  magnificent  fortress  walls  and  a  deep  ditch.  There  are  observation 
points  in  two  places  consisted  of  artificial  hills  in  south-west  and  south-east.  4 
cemeteries  exist  around  the  town.  Agsu  town  is  protected  like  an  important 
monument of country. 
Preliminary archaeological research  was carried out in Agsu town in 1983. 
Then a small-scale examination fossil was placed in two spaces with the purpose to
