Grants for Emergency works on Places of Worship - Heritage Lottery Fund


Purpose: Grants for Places of Worship funds urgent structural repairs to Grade I, II* and II listed places of worship in England. As part of the repair project, we can also fund improvements to facilities and work that helps more people get involved with these wonderful buildings. From providing space for training services to hosting concerts and crèches, places of worship have an increasing role in everyday life. And they are an important part of local and national heritage. That's why we must protect them for the future.
Who can apply: Under this programme, the HLF fund applications from all faith groups and denominations which are responsible for maintaining and repairing their place of worship. In order to apply, you must be a formally constituted organisation (governed by a set of rules, known as a constitution).
Amount available: Grants from £10,000–£250,000 can fund urgent structural repairs and help to make them better places for everyone to visit.
Deadline: This is a two stage application process. Stage 1 applications need to be received for the following dates:


  • 24 May 2016 for a decision in September 2016

Grants for Church Initiatives and preserving heritage - Allchurches Trust Ltd (ATL)


Purpose: The objects of ATL are to promote the Christian religion, to contribute to the funds of any charitable institution, association, fund or object and to carry out any charitable purpose. ATL responds to requests for financial assistance from Anglican churches, churches of other denominations and the Christian community. ATL supports appeals from churches for building and restoration projects, repair of church fabric, church community initiatives, religious charities, charities preserving the UK heritage and other charitable causes. ATL’s funding comes from Ecclesiastical Insurance.
Who can apply: Registered charities.

Amount available: Not specified, but many grants are £5000 to £20,000.

Deadline: Applications can be made at any time.

Funding for Historic Churches across Herefordshire


Purpose: The Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust was formed sixty years ago to provide financial help with repairs, restoration and improvement to churches of all denominations in Herefordshire. We look to help churches help themselves and since the trust was formed many hundreds of thousands of pounds have been given in the way of grants to help churches with essential repairs. 
Amount available:

  • Investigative Grants: Churches can apply for a grant of up to £1,000 to help with the costs of looking at a problem, for example a damp ceiling or cracks in the wall

  • Project Grants: Applications can be made for repairs, renovations and re-ordering and are awarded for amounts up to £10,000.  If the Church has a HLF grant, then HHCT follows the same proceedure of Stage I and Stage II grants.

  • Cornerstone Grants: The amount given is at the Trustees discretion but is given to churches of great historical merit or providing a community hub.

  • Loans available up to £10,000.


Who can apply: Churches of all denominations from across Herefordshire.
Deadline: None specified.

Funding for Christian Charities - The Anchor Foundation


Purpose: The Anchor Foundation provides grants to Christian Charities that encourage social inclusion through ministries of healing and the arts. The Foundation will consider applications for either capital or revenue funding. Only in exceptional circumstances will grants be given for building work.
Who can apply: Christian Charities.
Amount available: Grants of between £500 and £10,000 per year. Funding can be awarded for up to three years.
Deadline: Applications are considered at twice yearly trustees meetings in April and November and need to be received by 31st January and 31st July each year.
Grants for faith based community work - Church Urban Fund
Purpose: The Together Grants programme provides grants to faith-based organisations to engage in social action by supporting them to initiate or develop community work.
Who can apply: Faith-based groups working in the most deprived communities or with marginalised people.
Amount available: Up to £5,000.
Deadline: Applications can be made at any time.
Funding for projects that support disadvantaged people – The Archer Trust
Purpose: The Archer Trust is a UK Christian charitable grant-making trust that aims to support small UK charities that help people with physical or mental disabilities or people facing disadvantage. Preference will be given to those organisations working in areas of high unemployment and deprivation, and projects that make good use of volunteers The trust will fund projects in the UK and overseas (only via UK charities which can ensure that funds are being well used).
Who can apply: Preference is for small UK charities, for whom a grant would ‘make a considerable difference’.
Amount available: Grants are between £250 - £3,000.
Deadline: There is no deadline, but the trustees meet twice a year – March and September.

Bell installation, inspection and repair grants - Barron Bell Trust


Purpose: The Trust makes grants towards the provision, installation, inspection, repair and maintenance of carillons of bells in churches.
Who can apply: Low Church parishes only.
Amount available: Grants of £1000 to £3000. Please note that applicants should have raised in the region of 50% of the total cost of the project prior to making an application.
Deadline: Trustees meet twice a year to consider applications.

Bell restoration Grants - The Sharpe Trust
Purpose: The Trust administers grants for the maintenance, repair, and restoration of church bells in England and Wales.
Who can apply: Applications must be addressed to the Grant Secretary of the Trustees and should be made by, or on behalf of, the relevant authority of the Church concerned.
Amount available: Grants have ranged between £50 and £500, but the average is approx. £150.
Deadline: Applications will normally be acknowledged within one month of receipt, but are only considered at the twice yearly meeting of the Trustees – usually mid-March and mid-October.
