321 wap.aliyevheritage.org BAKU-BRUSSELS (Azerbaijan-European Union relations) President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev meets with Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for external relations and new neighborhood policy of the EU May 16, 2005 On May 16, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner for external relations and new neighborhood poli- cy of the EU, at the Royal Palace of Warsaw. Benita Ferrero-Waldner, reminding the previous meetings with the Azerbaijan’s President, has highly estimated the Azerbaijan is participation in the European neighborhood policy and bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Europe- an Union. Mrs. Waldner noted that there is concrete work underway in Azerbaijan’s rapprochement with the European family, and characterized Azerbaijan as a country of strategic importance. Having spoken about the Armenian-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, President Ilham Aliyev said the problem is an obstacle for peace and security in the region of South Caucasus and its integration into Europe. Ilham Aliyev has also talked about the economic reforms in the country and Azerbaijan’s role in the giant energy projects. Benita Ferrero-Waldner said that she was informed about successful reforms in Azerbaijan and the European Union is ready to help Azerbaijan for the thorough implementation of the reforms. Importance of further enlargement of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Euro- pean Union was emphasized in the meeting. President Ilham Aliyev has also reminded the decree he signed recently regard- ing the parliamentary elections. He said the country is loyal to integration to Europe and will actively participate in the new neighborhood policy. 322 www.aliyevheritage.org BAKU-BRUSSELS (Azerbaijan-European Union relations) President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev receives EC Commissioner for energy policy Andris Pielbags May 25, 2005 On May 25, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received EC Commissioner for energy policy Andris Pielbags at the Presidential Palace. Noting that Azerbaijan quickly integrates to the European structures, Azerbai- jani President stressed cooperation of the country with the authoritative world orga- nizations, in particular, with the European Union, in numerous spheres, including energy sphere. President Ilham Aliyev reminded active participation of Azerbaijan in the new neighborhood policy of the European Union and expressed confidence for further persistent strengthening of relations between the EU and Azerbaijan. Marking constant expansion of cooperation between Azerbaijan and European Union, Mr. Andris Pielbags underlined that Azerbaijan had achieved unprecedented breakthrough in the EU new neighborhood policy. He expressed trust in further ex- pansion and deepening of cooperation between Azerbaijan and EU. Mr. Andris Pielbags made memorial gift to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. October 3, 2006 On October 3, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received the delegation of the European Union Troika at the Presidential Palace. The President described the visit by the EU troika delegation to Azerbaijan as very important, adding it marks a new phase in the development of the bilateral cooperation. The Azerbaijani leader stressed the high level of relations between Azerbaijan and the EU, and said “we intend to develop our cooperation in different directions”. “The neighborhood policy will bring peace and prosperity to the whole region. I believe the discussions will help development of ties between the Euro- pean Union and South Caucasus”, President Ilham Aliyev noted. Sharing views of President Aliyev, Foreign Minister of Finland Erkki Tuomioja said they are now discussing the neighborhood policy in Azerbaijan. Mr. Tuomioja described the Baku visit as productive, saying he believes the neighborhood policy will contribute to settlement of conflicts in the region. He expressed his hope for expansion of relations not only in economic field, but also in frame of political dia- log and cooperation.
