Aras river – The river rises from Arzurum mountains of Turkey. Running through
the territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Southern Azerbaijan, it meets the
Kura river in the village of Sugovushan of the Sabirabad region of Azerbaijan, then
flows into the Caspian Sea. Length 1,072 km.
Kura river - The river rises from the north-eastern slopes of the Gizilgedik
mountain in Turkey. It runs through the Georgian territory and enters to Azerbaijan
and flows into the Caspain Sea through the plain of Kura-Aras.
Shahdeniz - Deposit rich of hydrocarbon resources in the Azerbaijani Sector of
Caspian Sea. It was discovered in 1999. With 1 trillion cubic meter of gas reserve,
Shahdeniz is one of the biggest deposits in the world.
Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline - Pipeline to transport Azerbaijani oil to the
European markets. It is 1768 km long, passes through Azerbaijan (443 km), Geor-
gia (249 km) and Turkey (1076 km). The cost of the project is nearly US$ 4 billions.
NABUCCO – A gas pipline project considered to deliver the Caspian natural gas
resources to the European markets.
OPEC - The ‘Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’. It has been
established in Baghdad in 1960, as an intergovernmental economical and political
organization. At the present time, OPEC regroups 12 countries: Algeria, Venezuela,
Gabon, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
The UN SC resolutions - In 1993, the UN SC adopted four resolutions, 822.
853, 874 and 884 with regard to the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Ar-
menian armed forces.Although the aforementioned resolutions firmly demand the
withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from Azerbaijani territories, they remain un-
fulfilled so far.
