Category: African-American, Comedy, Drama

Running Time: 1 hour 45 minutes

Language: English, French

DVD Release: 08/02/2005

Full Synopsis

A man gets a very big surprise when he meets his prospective son-in-law in this comedy. Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) is the understandably proud father of Theresa (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful and intelligent young woman living in New York City. When Percy learns that his daughter is dating someone and things are getting serious, he decides to do some research, and learns that her beau is a solid businessman. Percy arranges to meet the young man, but is a bit taken aback when he comes face to face with Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) -- Percy and his wife are African-American, and Simon is very, but very Caucasian. When it becomes clear that Simon and Theresa's relationship is likely altar-bound, Percy finds himself suddenly full of misgivings about the young man, especially since Simon tends to get rather clumsy when he's nervous. Guess Who was loosely adapted from the 1967 hit Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, though the race of the prospective father and son have been swapped, and the original film's comic undercurrent has been pushed to the forefront.

Hairspray (2007) PG 2 hr.

Starring: John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah

Full Synopsis:

Busting onto the screen with a catchy ditty called “Good Morning Baltimore,” Tracy Turnblad (engaging newcomer Nikki Blonsky) declares her love for her city, singing, and dancing while strutting her stuff down the streets of Baltimore circa 1961. She’s a happy girl with a healthy appetite who can dance better than the kids on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV program made up of white teenagers with perfect teeth and perfect figures. Tracy’s given the chance to prove she has what it takes when one of the show’s female dancers is forced to take a nine-month leave of absence.

During tryouts Tracy is put down and told off by the horrid station manager Velma Von Tussle (Pfeiffer) and her equally self-absorbed daughter, Amber (Snow). Even Tracy’s mother Edna (Travolta in one of the most interesting roles of his career) doesn’t believe someone of Tracy’s size (she’s beyond pleasantly plump) will ever have a chance at landing a spot on a TV series. But Tracy’s been taking lessons from the black kids she hangs out with in detention and her far-out moves help win her the job.

Tracy figures out that what’s going on on the show isn’t fair and shouldn’t be tolerated. Velma’s more than just an obnoxious loudmouth; she’s a racist who won’t allow Corny Collins to integrate the show and only reluctantly puts up with the ‘Negro Day’ broadcasts. One day a month Motormouth Maybelle (Queen Latifah) takes over for Corny (James Marsden), spinning records and hosting talented dancers who don’t conform to Velma’s ‘whites only’ standards. Taking up the cause, Tracy proudly proclaims that every day should be Negro Day and joins Motormouth Maybelle and her friends to work on ending segregation.

Synopsis

Lady in the Water director M. Night Shyamalan puts PG-13 suspense on pause to tell this grim apocalyptic tale about a family fleeing a natural disaster that poses a grave threat to the whole of humanity. Philadelphia high-school science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) is discussing the disappearance of the bees with his students when the staff is summoned to the theater and briefed about a mysterious event that is currently unfolding in New York City. According to reports, citizens in the vicinity of Central Park have suddenly and inexplicably begun seizing up just before killing themselves by whatever means are at their disposal. As the phenomena begins to spread and talk of terrorism fills the airwaves, Elliot, his wife, Alma (Zooey Deschanel), their friend Julian (John Leguizamo), and his daughter, Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez), board a train bound for the presumed safety of the country. When the train screeches to a halt before arriving at its final destination, however, the frightened passengers are forced to fend for themselves as each consecutive news report paints an increasingly grim picture of the situation in more urbanized areas. Theories abound on what could be causing the unexplainable rash of suicides, but the only thing that everyone seems to agree on is that it's some kind of airborne contagion that is carried in the wind. It would appear that humankind's reign on planet Earth has come to an end, but perhaps if this small band of survivors can find a safe place to lie low until this all blows over, all hope for survival of the species might not be lost just yet.
