habitats include hard rock coast, coastal heath and
grassland, bulb fields and, on Tresco, an excellent epiphytic
lichen community (although this has been much reduced
recently by unusually hard frosts).
Calcareous grassland is often rich in lower plants,
including rare and threatened species, and good examples
of this habitat, such as at Brean Down, occur near the coast
in Somerset and Avon.  Some specialist aquatic or semi-
aquatic species of all groups occur where there are streams
or rivers.  Reservoir and pool margins support important
specialist bryophyte communities of bare mud that is
exposed in drought years.  Small coastal bogs and areas of
wet heath are rich in bryophytes, particularly Sphagnum
spp., and also support some specialist fungi.  Stonewort
communities occur in some open waters, ditches (e.g. in the
Somerset Levels) and temporary pools (particularly on the
Lizard).
The region contains a number of threatened species,
some of which are given special protection under national
and international legislation.
