Increase in some obesity-related cancers 
Many of the cancers that are most
closely linked to obesity are increasing in younger populations. Between
1995 and 2014, the rates of multiple myeloma, colorectal cancer and other
obesity-related cancers went up disproportionately among young people.
This rise in cancer rates can’t be completely explained by increased
screening.
Decrease in other cancers 
The rates of Kaposi sarcoma, cancers of the
esophagus, larynx, lungs, bladder and cervix, and some other cancers are
decreasing in younger people. That’s especially true for cancers related to
tobacco use.
Increase in risk factors for heart disease 
High blood pressure and diabetes,
two important risk factors for heart disease, are rising disproportionately
among younger people. And as of 2016, 1 in 4 young adults had
prediabetes, putting this group at higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart
disease.
Since we know that certain habits that contribute to these risk factors, such
as a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet, develop early in life, this is a very

disturbing statistic. Of all the Americans who have prediabetes, only 1 in 10
knows that he or she has it.
Many people mistakenly think that mild elevations in blood pressure don’t
affect them, but since our hearts beat on average 100,000 times per day,
even small elevations in blood pressure are multiplied throughout the day
and have a huge effect.
Think of your heart as a muscle lifting weights every time it pumps. If it has
to pump out blood against higher pressure, your heart works harder and the
muscle gets thicker. On routine heart tests of young adults, doctors are
finding increased thickness of the heart walls and of heart mass. These are
predictors for future heart events that can cause major damage, like heart
attack and stroke.
