the eight-foot high memorial erected f o r the men w h o
fell i n the heroic defence o f Kohima. T h e monolith i s
similar t o ones used b y the Naga tribesmen t o honour
their dead slain i n battle. U n d e r the inscription i s a
large bronze plaque set i n the stone with the Order o f
Battle and the dedication:
Then follows the units w h o took p a r t and a t t h e
base o f the memorial, in red sandstone and black marble,
is 5 Div's. famous sign, the ball o f lire.
The inscription on the memorial is given below.
The ceremony o f unveiling the memorial was per-
formed b y the District Commissioner o f the Naga Hills,
Mr. C. R. Pawsey, C.S.I., M . C . , who remained i n
Kohiiila throughout the campaign. Present a t the cere-
mony were officers and men o f the Assam Rifles, the 908
Jndian. Workshops, a n d civilians. T h e Queen's O w n
Royal •West Kents provided the guard o f honour.

The inscription on the Memorial reads:
Owing to the fact that 5 Div. is now in Malaya, only
Padre R. B. Randolph and nine men o f the Kents could
be present. A l l ten suffered the siege. A f t e r the unveiling
a Gurkha bugler sounded the Last Post and a private who
had been severely wounded at Kohima placed a wreath at
the base o f the monument.
Five D i v i s i o n w a s t h e senior I n d i a n D i v i s i o n i n t h e
Burma theatre, and took part in four separate campaigns.
In 1943 the division went into action i n the Arakan. I n
March, 1944, w h e n t h e Japanese threat t o M a n i p u r
developed, the entire division was flown o u t t o Kohima.
In July o f the same year the division began the long and
arduous campaign down the Tiddim Road that brought i t
to victory at Kalemyo last November. L a s t Spring 5 Div.
was in action on the Mandalay-Rangoon road.
