ESSAYS
Jorge Fiori
Jorge Fiori is a sociologist and urban planner. He is Director of the Housing and
Urbanism Programme and Chairman at the Architectural Association Graduate
School. He is also Senior Lecturer in the Development Planning Unit of University
College London, and Visiting Lecturer at several European and Latin American
universities. His teaching, research, and publications focus mainly on the interface
of urban social policies and spatial strategies, with particular emphasis on issues
of housing, irregular settlements, and scaling up in slum upgrading and poverty
alleviation. He is also a consultant to several international and national agencies
on issues of urban development planning and housing. 
David Jason Gerber
Dr. David Jason Gerber researches the intersection of design with computation and
technology, and his team is funded by industry and the National Science Foundation.
He is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Engineering at the University of
Southern California. From 2006 to 2010, he was Vice President at Gehry Technologies
Inc., and he has also worked as an architect at Zaha Hadid Architects, Moshe Safdie,
and Steinberg Group. He holds degrees from UC Berkley (BArch, 1996), AADRL
(MArch, 2000), Harvard GSD (MDS, 2003; DDes, 2007). Previous academic positions
include Harvard University, MIT’s Media Lab, SCIArc, the Architectural Association,
UCLA, Stanford University, Innsbruck University, and EPFL.
Marina Lathouri
Marina Lathouri is an architect and critic whose research interests lie between
urban theory and political philosophy, focussing on emerging forms of urban
dwelling and public spaces, and the role of writing, production, and
communication in architecture. Lathouri is Director of the History and Critical
Thinking program at the Architectural Association. She is Visiting Lecturer at the
University of Cambridge, and previous positions include the University of
Pennsylvania, the University of Navarra, Spain, and Universidad Catolica in
Santiago, Chile. Her architectural projects and urban studies include consultancy
to the Urban Planning Department in Geneva. Her publications include Intimate
Metropolis: Urban Subjects in the Modern City (with Di Palma and Periton;
Routledge, 2009).
Patrik Schumacher
Patrik Schumacher is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects and founding director of
the Design Research Lab at the Architectural Association in London, together with
Brett Steele, where he continues to teach in the program. Schumacher joined Zaha
Hadid Architects in 1988 and has since been a co-author of numerous key projects.
He studied philosophy, mathematics, and architecture in Bonn, London, and
Stuttgart (Diploma, 1990), and at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt
University (PhD, 1999). He is also Tenured Professor at the Institute for
Experimental Architecture, Innsbruck University and Guest Professor at the
University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In 2012 he published the second volume of
The Autopoesis of Architecture (John Wiley & Sons).

Jonathan D. Solomon
Jonathan D. Solomon is Associate Dean at the School of Architecture at Syracuse
University. His work explores public space and the contemporary city, through
design projects such as Ooi Botos Gallery in Hong Kong; research projects such
as his 2004 book 13 Projects for the Sheridan Expressway (Princeton Architectural
Press); curatorial projects such as Workshopping in the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice
Architecture Biennale 2010; and publication projects through 306090 books, of
which he is a founding editor and where he has served since 2001. His latest book,
Cities without Ground (with Adam Frampton and Clara Wong), explores the
relationship between climate and public space in the unique three-dimensional
urbanism of Hong Kong. 
Peter Trummer
Peter Trummer is Professor for Urban Design and Head of ioud, the Institute for
Urban Design and Urban Planning, at the University of Innsbruck. He is a former
Head of the Associative Design Program at the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam
(2004–2010). Trummer studied at TU Graz (Masters), the Berlage Institute,
Amsterdam, and is currently working on his PhD. He was project architect at 
UN Studio before establishing his practice in 2001. He has taught at Sci-Arc,
University of Pennsylvania, TU Munich, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna,
and he has lectured at the AA, IAAC, and Rice University. His recent publications
can be found in: AD Reader: Computational Design ThinkingAD Digital Cities,
volume 18, Arch+189Morpho-Ecologies, and Manifold.
Tom Verebes
Tom Verebes is Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of
Architecture and Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the
University of Hong Kong. Formerly Co-Director of the Architectural Association
Design Research Lab (DRL) in London, where he taught from 1997–2009, he has
been the Director of the AA Shanghai Visiting School since 2007, and is a former
Guest/Visiting Professor at ABK Stuttgart. Tom is the founder and Creative
Director of OCEAN CN, a network of specialist design consultants based in Hong
Kong, with links to Beijing, Shanghai, and London. He has written, published,
exhibited, and lectured extensively in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle
East, and serves on several editorial and advisory boards. 
INTERVIEWS
Tom Barker
Tom Barker is the Chair of the Digital Futures Initiative at OCAD University in
Toronto. Formerly Professor of Architecture, Design and Innovation at the
University of Technology, Sydney and Head of the Industrial Design Engineering
department at the Royal College of Art, London, Barker invented SmartSlab, a
multimedia large-scale digital LED display panel system, in 1999, in collaboration
with Zaha Hadid Architects. Barker also collaborated to develop V/SpaceLAB, a
virtual reality system for architecture in 2003. From 1997 to 2005, he ran DCA-b
(later b Consultants Ltd.), a multidisciplinary design practice.
