Similar to
L. lanata in general habit 60–70 cm tall with grey to silver-grey leaves. Flower spike
with purple flowers, bracts subtending the whorls narrowly rhombic (diamond) in shape, about

longer than broad. Flowers violet purple. Flowers mid-June to July.
Several hybrids of this parentage are in cultivation and make fine ornamental garden plants
that tend to be more robust in cultivation than
L. lanata . Cultivars include: ‘Richard Gray’ – to
60 cm with rounded flower spikes and ‘Sawyers’ – taller form to 70 cm with large conical flower
spikes, both of UK origin; ‘Silver Frost’ – to 50 cm with conical spikes raised in the United
States; ‘Joan Head’ – 60–70 cm with cylindrical spikes raised in New Zealand.
