SUMMARY
Widespread effect of technology has affected the social and business lives of individuals such that most
of the teachers use technology in order to record keeping, plan lessons, create worksheets or communicate with
their peers, students and parents. It can be seen that teachers are inclined to using technology conducive to
support their existing practices such as demonstration and drill-and-practice. It is crucial to identify the factors
that affect teachers’ technology use because teachers are the agents of change in technology integration. This can
say us that effective technology integration may occur if teachers intend to use technology effectively. Two factors,
called external and internal factors, affect teachers’ intention to use technology. Technology may not be integrated
at an expected level because of internal factors although external factors are overcome. Thus, internal factors
have greater effects on teachers’ intentions to use technology than external factors.
Examining pre-service teachers’ is a way to predict how, why, and when pre-service teachers would use
technology in their future classrooms because teachers’ beliefs related to their abilities to teach with technology
will affect their thoughts and behaviors. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) which is developed by Davis,
Bagozzi, and Warshaw (1999) is a useful conceptual framework in order to formulate what kinds of relationships
exist between teachers’ behavioral intention to use technology and beliefs such as epistemological and
pedagogical. TAM used in this study have seven constructs; demographic variables, epistemological beliefs,
pedagogical beliefs, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards computer usage, and behavioral
intention to use technology.
This study employs a survey method to develop a model that shows the effect of pre-service teachers’
epistemological and pedagogical beliefs on their technology acceptance. Data has been collected by
administrating a survey 616 pre-service teachers with different departments and grade levels. Participants were
selected via criterion sampling from sophomores (n=214, 35%), juniors (n=196, 33%) and seniors (n=206, 33%)
who took a few numbers of courses related to pedagogy and technology that help them to make sense of survey
items. 74% of participants are females and 26% are males. The average age of pre-service teachers is 21.53
(Sd=1,655). The data collection tool comprised of four sections. The first section includes demographic variables
such as university, department, grade level, owning a computer, the level of computer use. The second and third
section is related to pre-service teachers’ beliefs of epistemological and pedagogical, respectively. The last section
of survey consists of remained constructs; perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards computer
usage, and behavioral intention to use technology. The survey was administered in a paper-pencil environment.
The structural equation will be employed in data analyzing to demonstrate the direct or indirect relationships
between measured constructs (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward using computer,
intention to use computers, conceptions about teaching and learning, epistemological beliefs). The findings are
expected to give insight into factors that affect pre-service teachers’ technology acceptance.
